Meet actor who debuted as baby, was accused of being unprofessional on sets, dated top actress and is playing transgender in next

Currently, this actor from South India is among the top-tier performers. He’s made a significant mark in Tamil cinema by taking on diverse, non-traditional characters on screen. Remarkably, his latest venture received positive reviews even though it didn’t fare well at the box office.

Did you guess who we are talking about? Yes, it’s Silambarasan TR.

Who is Silambarasan TR?

Silambarasan TR was born in 1984 in Madras (now Chennai), to film director T Rajender and his spouse Usha Rajender. He has a younger brother called Kuralarasan and an older sister named Ilakiya.

In Chennai, he finished his high school education at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, followed by attending Loyola College for his undergraduate studies within the same city.

STR’s debut in films as a baby to a child artist

As a young child, I had my very first taste of cinema when I made my on-screen appearance in the 1984 film “Uravai Katha Kili,” held snugly in my father’s arms. This marked the beginning of my journey in the world of films.

Starting from 1995, he started acting in numerous films directed by his father, appearing as a child artist. Notable ones include Thai Thangai Paasam, Oru Vasantha Geetham, Shanthi Enathu Shanthi, Sabash Babu and many others.

Simbu’s debut in films as a hero

2002 saw Silambarasan TR stepping into the role of leading actor for the first time in the movie “Kadhal Azhivathillai,” a project helmed by none other than his own father as director.

2004 marked a significant breakthrough for STR when he starred alongside Jyothika in the film “Manmadhan,” which were noteworthy successes at the box office.

Collaboration with Mani Ratnam, success and beyond

From 2010 to 2023, a timeframe lasting approximately 13 years, Simbu (Silambarasan) consistently released movies in the middle tier category at the box office. Some of these films garnered positive results, while others didn’t quite meet their projected success.

Among the cinematic masterpieces that have captivated my heart are Mani Ratnam’s “Chekka Chivantha Vaanam,” Gautham Vasudev Menon’s “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa,” Vedam, Podaa Podi, Eeswaran, Maanaadu, and Pathu Thala, to name just a few. These films are more than just movies; they’re emotional journeys that I can’t get enough of!

When Silambarasan was accused of unprofessionalism on sets

2017 marked a challenging period for me, as I found myself in hot water with industry bigwigs due to a red card incident. My movie, Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan, saw me being accused of unprofessional behavior on set by the filmmakers themselves.

During a chat with Behindwoods, the producer alleged that STR often switched filming locations, showed up late to set, and even modified the call sheets substantially, which resulted in substantial financial losses for the production.

Silambarasan lost weight after training in Bharatnatyam

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, STR openly admitted to having put on extra pounds. He subsequently decided to prioritize shedding this excess weight and turned his attention towards spiritual growth.

During that time, he switched to a vegetarian diet and took up learning Bharatanatyam dance, ultimately helping him lose about 68 pounds.

Silambarasan’s controversial relationships

Apart from his professional endeavors, STR, on various occasions, has found himself at the center of debates regarding his private life. For instance, during the production of the 2006 movie Vallavan, he was romantically involved with his fellow actress, Nayanthara.

After the film premiered, they ended their relationship, but it was only after nearly a year that news of their romance spread. Interestingly, it was around that same time that Simbu shared photos of them, sparking plenty of rumors and conversation.

Silambarasan TR’s film front, all set to play a transgender role next

In Mani Ratnam’s latest movie, Thug Life, STR made an appearance. Unfortunately, it appears the film didn’t fare well at the box office. Despite being the secondary lead alongside Kamal Haasan, viewers have still praised STR for delivering a powerful performance.

Moving forward, there are several movies scheduled for him, including STR 50, where he will portray a transgender character for the first time, under the direction of Desingh Periasamy.
