MCU Losing Its Super Powers? ‘Thunderbolts*’ Tracking Looking Pretty Weak

It’s highly likely that the 2025 summer box office will have a stronger opening than last year’s, especially with Marvel’s Thunderbolts* premiering on the first weekend of May. Yet, the antihero comic book film has its challenges ahead.

Based on projections, the film “Thunderbolts” is expected to make between $63 million and $77 million in its domestic premiere, with a goal of earning $70 million. While this figure seems reasonable on its own, it’s significantly lower than the typical opening for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title during summer months. Given an estimated production budget of $180 million, “Thunderbolts” would need to generate around $450 million to $500 million globally just to cover costs, including marketing and theater fees.

Originally introduced in Marvel Comics back in 1997, the Thunderbolts were primarily a team made up of former villains who had undergone reformations. However, their popularity as a comic series has dwindled over time.

Disney experts claim that for the first time on the big screen, an ensemble cast of unconventional heroes and villains will be showcased in the upcoming film. However, since it’s a new property, advance ticket sales have been modest so far. The studio reports a positive response to the movie from those who have already viewed pre-screenings, as well as from theater owners who watched Thunderbolts footage at CinemaCon last week.
