Summary
- Max is slated to rebrand back to HBO Max this summer
- The announcement comes just two years after HBO was dropped for the singular Max branding
- Warner Bros. Discovery believes that returning to the original branding will help further drive success
This summer, Max is returning to its original brand HBO Max, two years after it initially switched over. Throughout these past two years, HBO and Max have marketed independently, yet they’ve both been recognized together at industry awards under the combined label “HBO/Max”. The decision to rebrand was made by Warner Bros. Discovery when they chose to simplify the streamer’s name to simply “Max” initially.
Approximately two months after Max unveiled its revised logo in the timeless black-and-white color scheme, there’s been an announcement of a reversal in branding strategy. In the official press release, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) stated that bringing back the HBO brand to HBO Max will enhance the service, making it more distinct for subscribers. This action also signifies WBD’s commitment to continuously innovate and adapt their strategy based on consumer data and insights, ensuring they remain competitive in the market. Interestingly, WBD had previously unveiled the new logo to advertising executives before this announcement was made.
CEO David Zaslav addressed the crowd at Madison Square Garden’s Theater, announcing a return to the original brand name, HBO. He explained that this move aims to boost the growth of their global streaming service, which thrives on the strength of its content. The sudden change in branding has left consumers somewhat bewildered, prompting the social media team to stay vigilant and respond to any queries. Additionally, they’ve been using humor on X platform, jokingly referring to this reversal as a “Reverse Uno” effect.
Update:
HBO is a high-end cable television network, while Max is an online streaming service that offers content from various brands, such as HBO. All HBO shows can be streamed on Max, but series produced by Max are not broadcast live on HBO. Both platforms are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, who intend to rebrand Max back to HBO Max in the future.
