MAX cancels Pretty Little Liars after season two

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of countless TV series, I must say that MAX’s version of Pretty Little Liars was a rollercoaster ride that ultimately fell short of its potential. After two seasons, it seems like the writers ran out of ideas, or perhaps budget cuts took their toll.

Following two consecutive seasons, MAX’s adaptation of “Pretty Little Liars” has come to an end, and regrettably, this outcome wasn’t entirely unexpected. With streaming platforms often cancelling shows swiftly, financial constraints, and the varied responses from viewers regarding this newest rendition of the narrative, the continuation of “Pretty Little Liars” didn’t seem viable due to a lack of compelling reasons to persist.

For the initial two seasons, viewers expressed their disapproval towards the Pretty Little Liars reboot due to its limited number of episodes per season and the direction the writers took with the series. Watching Riverdale spiral out of control and incorporating some of the CW drama’s disliked plotlines into Pretty Little Liars, such as the mask doppelganger cliffhanger at the end of season two, made it seem that if there had been a season three, it would have followed in the footsteps of Riverdale’s mask arc in season four.

Although shifting towards a horror-centric narrative was an intriguing approach to make the story less predictable like in the Freeform drama, this direction proved unsustainable because the core of Pretty Little Liars, as depicted in the Freeform show and original books, revolves around the intrigue and terror of being pursued by someone who knows all your secrets. In contrast, MAX’s portrayal focuses more on horror clichés.

Despite lowering the stakes, the approach made it hard for viewers to fully accept that the primary characters would meet their end at the hands of the serial-killer persona of “A” or season two’s antagonist, Bloody Rose. In simpler terms, the method created doubts among fans about the possibility of these characters being killed off.

The show didn’t have as many fun moments between its main characters to strengthen their friendships as viewers might have preferred, which could have hindered emotional investment. This issue was often due to the limited number of episodes per season and the need to keep the mystery within a single short season. Although the idea of uncovering the killer’s identity was intriguing, eight episodes were insufficient for properly introducing, developing, and revealing the killer’s identity.

The actors put in their utmost effort, delivering charming performances and striving diligently to create an engaging and binge-worthy spin on a fresh world. The seasons of “Pretty Little Liars” titled “Original Sin” and “Summer School” are entertaining viewing experiences, boasting stories with great potential that could have grown further had the plot and restricted screen time permitted it. Regrettably, MAX failed to recognize the series’ potential, leaving viewers wondering what might have been for these characters who deserved a deeper exploration.
