Matthew Rhys joining wife Keri Russell on Netflix (but not in The Diplomat)

As a fan who has lived through the intense emotional rollercoaster that was ‘The Americans’, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when rumors swirled about Matthew Rhys potentially reuniting with Keri Russell in ‘The Diplomat’ season 2. Alas, it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer for that dream to become reality. However, the news that Matthew Rhys is joining Claire Danes in Netflix’s ‘The Beast in Me’ has certainly softened the blow!

Aren’t we all secretly hoping that Matthew Rhys, who played in The Americans, would astonish us by appearing in the second season of The Diplomat alongside his real-life wife Keri Russell? If you weren’t, I certainly was wishing for it! After all, with his Emmy Award-winning talent, he could have made quite a stir in The Diplomat, facing off against Kate Wyler. Unfortunately, it seems that Rhys won’t be joining the cast of The Diplomat, but at least we can look forward to seeing him on Netflix instead!

In August 2024, Variety announced that Matthew Rhys was set to team up with Emmy winner Claire Danes for the upcoming Netflix original limited series titled “The Beast Within Me.” Since March, Danes, famous for her roles in “My So-Called Life” and “Homeland,” has been attached to this project, which is being developed by “Homeland” co-creator Howard Gordon. In addition to starring, Danes will also serve as an executive producer for the series.

Although Netflix hasn’t disclosed the number of episodes or production schedule for “The Beast in Me,” here’s what we can anticipate so far: Claire Danes will portray Aggie Wiggs, a writer grappling with creative stagnation and mourning her son’s demise. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when the enigmatic new neighbor Nile Jarvis, played by Matthew Rhys, settles in next door.

Just like Maggie is widely recognized as an accomplished author, Nile holds a similar reputation in the real estate world. However, he has a certain notoriety associated with him due to past suspicions surrounding his wife’s disappearance. Investigative journalist Aggie delves deeply into his story to reveal the truth, but her probing could stir up trouble if she disturbs a hornet’s nest – and it seems she often does.

Here’s how Netflix describes the forthcoming thriller limited series:

In The Beast in Me, acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs (Danes) has receded from public life since the tragic death of her young son, unable to write, a ghost of her former self. But she finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is bought by Nile Jarvis (Rhys), a famed and formidable real estate mogul who was once the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth — chasing his demons while fleeing her own — in a game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly.

Without a shadow of a doubt, “The Beast in Me” is set to create quite a stir among viewers, boasting two Emmy Award-winning actors, Danes and Rhys. Their characters will portray two individuals who are evidently concealing and fleeing from something. This suspenseful series is expected to become a favorite for future award ceremonies, potentially adding more nominations (and victories) to the actors’ resumes.

Regarding the upcoming Emmy nominations, Russell is set to reappear on Netflix on Halloween, October 31, 2024, delivering another exceptional performance in the second season of their original political drama titled The Diplomat. Last season, Russell earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and it’s likely (or at least highly probable!) that she will secure another nomination for her work in season 2.

This new season boasts a guest appearance by Academy Award winner Allison Janney, making it one of the most anticipated TV events this year. However, I remain optimistic that Rhys might make a surprise appearance in future episodes as well. Since Rhys and Russell shared screen time in the 2023 film “Cocaine Bear,” there’s a chance we could see them together again, perhaps in season 3 if it gets renewed.
