As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for movies that blend grit, drama, and a dash of unpredictability, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the sight of Matt Smith’s transformation into a punk-rock rebel for Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film, “Caught Stealing.” Having played my share of baseball games in virtual worlds, I can only imagine what it would be like to step onto a real field with this star-studded cast, led by Austin Butler as the burned-out former player Hank Thompson.
Actor Matt Smith, from House of the Dragon, and Austin Butler, known for Masters of the Air, were spotted filming for Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming thriller, titled Caught Stealing.
In a surprising transformation, the main actor, Butler, was spotted during the shooting of “Caught Stealing”. The almost unidentifiable Smith, deviating from his usual characters, sported an audacious mohawk and embraced a punk aesthetic for this role.

In accordance with Charlie Huston’s novel, Aronofsky’s upcoming project will center around the character Hank Thompson, a once-prominent baseball player who is now past his prime. This story unfolds as Thompson finds himself unknowingly embroiled in a thrilling struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 90s New York City. (played by Butler)
Caught Stealing served as the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy. Huston is also writing the script for the film adaptation.
Who else stars in Caught Stealing?
Besides Butler, Smith, and Zoë Kravitz (from Mad Max: Fury Road), Regina King (The Harder They Fall), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), and Will Brill (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Caught Stealing boasts an impressive ensemble cast. More recent additions to the cast include Bad Bunny (from Bullet Train), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Law and Order: Criminal Intent).
2013 had initially been scheduled for a film adaptation of “Caught Stealing”, with Patrick Wilson previously attached to play the character of Hank Thompson, which is now being played by Butler instead.
In collaboration with his production partner at Protozoa Pictures, Ari Handel, Darren Aronofsky directed the movie titled “Caught Stealing”. This film represents Aronofsky’s return to directing following the release of his critically acclaimed 2022 film, “The Whale”, featuring Brendan Fraser.
Apart from being known for his exceptional work, Aronofsky is the creative mind behind critically-acclaimed films such as The Fountain, Pi, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, and Black Swan. Last year, it was revealed that he will be taking on the task of directing a biopic about Elon Musk, which will be produced by A24.
As a gaming enthusiast eagerly waiting, I can’t reveal an exact date just yet, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that “Caught Stealing” will grace our screens some time in the year 2025.
