As a dedicated follower of Telugu cinema, I must say that Varun Tej Konidela’s latest offering, Matka, has been quite an intriguing journey for me. Having grown up hearing tales of the Matka gambling world and its notorious figures, it was fascinating to see this story unfold on the big screen. The film showcased a gritty portrayal of Vasu’s life, a man who dared to defy the odds and rise from poverty to become a prominent figure in the gambling underworld.
On November 14, 2024, Varun Tej Konidela graced the big screen with his film “Matka”. Following a 21-day run in theaters, this gripping period action thriller will make its digital debut on an online streaming platform.
Karuna Kumar’s new movie will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting December 5, 2024. This was announced by the platform via a tweet that reads: “Experience the thrill of risk, reward, and gamble with MATKA Vasu, the ultimate ringmaster. Catch it on Amazon Prime, December 5.

The film “Matka” revolves around Vasu’s tale, a man struggling to emerge from the depths of poverty and make a name for himself in the world of gambling. Taking place during the time span of 1958 to 1982 in Vishakapatanam, the movie offers an insight into the life of this gambler spanning over 24 years, as he transforms from a simple player to a gangster.
The film is inspired by a true story about Ratan Khetri, a Matka gambler, and the genuine events that unfolded within the Matka gambling scene, which was famously referred to as “satta”. This form of betting, similar to lotteries, began prior to India’s Partition and was eventually declared illegal in the country.
In addition to showcasing Varun Tej in multiple distinct appearances as he navigated through a crime-ridden landscape, the movie also featured an elderly version of him towards the end. Apart from Varun, the film included Meenakshi Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi in significant roles, acting as the main female characters.
Apart from them, the film featured actors like Saloni Aswani, Satyam Rajesh, P. Ravi Shankar, Kishore, Naveen Chandra, Ajay Ghosh, and others in significant roles. Although Varun’s performance was widely praised, the movie received a mix of positive and negative feedback from critics regarding its storyline. Unfortunately, this led to poor box office performance for the film.
I had the pleasure of following the 14th cinematic journey of Varun Tej, where the talented GV Prakash Kumar lent his musical genius to the production. The film was graciously made available in various languages such as Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam for a wider audience like myself to enjoy.
It’s also worth mentioning that Varun Tej could soon be seen in a movie directed by Merlapaka Gandhi, known for Krishnarjuna Yudham. However, according to 123 Telugu, the producer of the film is said to have withdrawn due to Matka’s poor box office performance, but this hasn’t been officially verified yet.
