Matchbox Cast Adds Teyonah Parris, Plot Details Revealed

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for iconic toy-turned-media franchises, I must say I’m genuinely thrilled by the news of Teyonah Parris joining the cast of the upcoming Matchbox movie. Her diverse acting portfolio, from Mad Men to her Marvel adventures, promises an electrifying performance that’ll undoubtedly add depth to this globetrotting adventure.

The cast of the “Matchbox” film is expanding, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter. It appears that Teyonah Parris may join John Cena in this upcoming cinematic venture inspired by the iconic Matchbox brand.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be joining forces with none other than John Cena – who was already cast in this project earlier this year – along with Jessica Biel and Sam Richardson in an upcoming movie! This film, titled after a legendary toy line from Mattel, will be penned by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper. As a fan of these talented individuals and the iconic toy series, I can’t wait to see what magic they’ll weave on the big screen!

Parris is particularly recognized for playing Dawn Chambers on the popular AMC show Mad Men, along with roles in the movies Dear White People and Empire, and her character Monica Rambeau within the Marvel Cinematographic Universe.

What do we know about the Matchbox movie?

In another section of the Heat Vision newsletter, the outline for the Matchbox movie was revealed. Although no significant information was disclosed, the report mentions that the film is being characterized as a thrilling, globe-trotting adventure featuring a team of childhood companions who must unite to prevent an impending global catastrophe and rekindle their friendship in the process.

The upcoming Matchbox movie, based on the iconic toy brand, is set to be directed by Sam Hargrave, renowned for overseeing the Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction films. Conceived by automotive expert Jack Odell for Lesney Products in 1953, Matchbox has since been owned by Mattel since 1997. The screenplay for this film is jointly written by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project). This production is a collaborative effort between Apple Original Films, Skydance, and Mattel Films, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Robbie Brenner serving as producers.

“For nearly 70 years, Matchbox has carried enormous cultural relevance and inspired generations of kids to unleash their imaginations, combining what they see in the world every day with what they dream their own world to be,” Brenner said in a previous statement when the project was first announced back in 2022. “We look forward to working with our incredible partners at Skydance Media to craft a story for the big screen that evokes the same, imaginative spirit of this beloved Mattel franchise and delights fans of all ages.”
