The servers of TikTok have shut down within the U.S., signifying its official prohibition in the country for both users and the platform itself. Interestingly, two other well-known apps, CapCut and Marvel Snap, appear to be unintentionally affected by this situation: CapCut is a user-friendly creative tool with AI capabilities, while Marvel Snap is a card game that can be played without charge. Notably, these two apps share a connection with ByteDance, the company specifically targeted in the US federal ban.
Due to a recent ban on ByteDance, the companies behind TikTok, Marvel Snap, and CapCut (which is owned by TikTok) are now directing their website visitors to new pages that discuss this ban. As a result, users can no longer access any of these three services. Instead, they will find information about the ban affecting ByteDance. For those who wish to take action, Marvel Snap offers the option for users to download their personal data or delete their account. Unfortunately, Nuverse is also owned by ByteDance.
The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to uphold President Joe Biden’s order against ByteDance, requiring the divestiture of its US business or face closure by this weekend, has made a TikTok ban almost inevitable. It seems that ByteDance did not seek a buyer within the given timeframe and instead chose to shut down their US servers in accordance with the new law and court ruling. Regrettably, TikTok isn’t the only casualty of this ban, as we discovered this weekend – Marvel Snap, a well-loved game developed by Second Dinner and Nuverse, also suffered this fate, having been banned alongside TikTok.
Currently, individuals in the U.S. must temporarily forego using the app since Second Dinner has announced that they are actively working on restoring its service on the Marvel Snap Discord.
According to President-elect Donald Trump, there’s a possibility he could push back the deadline for TikTok to secure an American purchaser. Keep an eye on this developing story; we’ll bring you more details as they emerge, only at Shacknews.
