By January 18, 2025, American players were blocked from playing the game due to restrictions set by the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA). This law targets companies affiliated with ByteDance, a Chinese tech company that manages TikTok, an application of significant U.S. national security interest.
What Happened to Marvel Snap?
Last Saturday, I, as a devoted player, was suddenly unable to access Marvel Snap on my mobile device without any prior notice. Interestingly, although it’s still available on PC via Steam, numerous players have encountered login problems, making it practically unplayable across all platforms.
Second Dinner, the game’s developer based in California, clarified that this sudden takedown was unexpected and directly related to ByteDance’s broader disputes with the U.S. government.
We’ve been tirelessly striving day and night to restore MARVEL SNAP in the U.S., and we anticipate its return online within a day. Rest assured, we’ll keep you informed as soon as it goes back up.
In the interim, international players should be able to carry on playing without any complications.

Through a sequence of posts on Twitter, Second Diner sought to alleviate concerns by stating they were “working tirelessly” to reinstate access for U.S. players. They guaranteed that the game would be operational again within 24 hours. Nonetheless, this interruption has sparked doubts among many about the long-term robustness of Marvel Snap in its most significant market.
The TikTok Connection
The company publishing Marvel Snaps, Nuverse, is owned by ByteDance, the same corporation responsible for TikTok, which has faced criticism from U.S. politicians. The primary concerns revolve around suspicions that ByteDance might share user data with the Chinese government and manipulate public opinion through its platforms. However, ByteDance has repeatedly denied these accusations, stating that most of the U.S. users’ data is kept in Singapore, not China.

In March 2024, a U.S. congressional order instructed ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company due to accumulated concerns. However, ByteDance declined, which led to increased friction and court cases. Recently, the appeal was turned down, leading to TikTok’s suspension, unintentionally impacting Marvel Snap. Interestingly, other Nuverse games such as Ragnarok X: 3rd Anniversary and Earth: Revival can still be accessed in the U.S., which implies that the ban on Marvel Snap might not have been a deliberate action but rather an administrative oversight or side effect.
Will Marvel Snap Return?
The progress of Second Dinner in bringing back Marvel Snap is dependent on the resolution of a larger legal dispute between ByteDance and the U.S. government. If TikTok manages to return to the U.S., it could signal a smoother path for Marvel Snap and other ByteDance products. However, if the issue persists or worsens, American users might continue experiencing interruptions.
Our team is diligently working on resuming our service in the U.S., aiming to have everything operational again within the next 12 hours. We truly value your patience and understanding during this process, and we thank you for your continued support. Keep an eye out, as we’ll be back online shortly!

The ongoing TikTok situation goes far beyond just the Marvel Snap, showcasing the complexity of striking a balance between safeguarding national security and fostering worldwide technological advancement. As of now, users outside the U.S. can still play the game, while American players must be patient for a resolution to unfold.
In this era of rapid digital advancement, it’s evident that the temporary pause in Marvel Snap has shed light on the intricate link between technology and politics. As a dedicated fan, I can only speculate about whether Marvel Snap will weather this geopolitical storm; time will be the ultimate judge.
