Marvel Rivals devs have created cross-progression, but “platform-specific rules” are holding it back

As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless digital landscapes and battled countless foes over the past three decades, I must say that the lack of cross-progression in Marvel Rivals, a game which promises to bring together some of the most iconic characters from the Marvel universe, is indeed a sore point.

NetEase’s Marvel Rivals is an expansive title where you can demolish stunning landscapes while embodying your favorite characters from Marvel, whether hero or villain. Unfortunately, this game released in 2024 misses out on a crucial aspect for free-to-play multiplayer games: seamless progression across multiple devices and platforms, also known as cross-progression.

During a recent conversation, Marvel Rivals’ creative director Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen disclosed that they are developing a form of progress synchronization. Unfortunately, due to certain regulations tied to specific platforms, this functionality can’t be rolled out just yet.

Marvel Rivals cross-progression held back

As a dedicated gamer speaking to DotEsports, I shared that the process of integrating cross-progression isn’t straightforward due to the intricate platform-specific regulations we need to adhere to. While we’ve got a fundamental system in place, our focus is on ensuring every platform—Xbox, PlayStation, and so forth—gets its unique aspects just right before fully implementing it.

Chen mentioned that they’re examining the issue and finding a solution,” he said. “As soon as our team is prepared and has worked out the details, we’ll make sure to inform everyone, with the players being the first to receive updates.

In the case of Marvel Rivals, players who tested the game during its PC Alpha phase have exclusive skins that aren’t transferable to their console versions due to a lack of cross-progression. Unfortunately, this issue isn’t unique to Marvel Rivals; many games, upon release, have found themselves missing out on this feature.

Instead of relying on external tools like Epic Multiplayer Services, Marvel Rivals opts to develop its own multiplayer technology to connect players and manage its cross-play features. It appears the team has made significant progress towards cross-progression, suggesting a potential launch could be imminent within the next few months.
