Originally, Overwatch 2 from Blizzard reigned supreme among hero shooter games, but its free-to-play model that had drawn criticism for a long time has now lost its title to Marvel Rivals, developed by NetEase.
Although there have been some unintended blocking problems and uneven development, the game Marvel Rivals is rapidly gaining popularity, while interest in Blizzard’s previous project seems to be declining.
Marvel Rivals decimated Overwatch
Immediately after Marvel Rivals was launched, the number of active players for Overwatch 2 saw a significant drop, reaching its smallest concurrent player count on Steam during the same period when Marvel Rivals was released.
Although the game can be played on various other platforms and through Blizzard’s BattleNet launcher, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the game’s overall success is fully represented by these factors alone.
Since its debut, Overwatch has been one of the most-watched live games on Twitch. However, after the initial weeks following the release of Rivals, the number of viewers watching Overwatch on Twitch has significantly dropped, reflecting a possible decrease in the game’s overall popularity.
According to data from Twitch stat teacher Stream Charts, as reported by Dexerto, there has been a decline of approximately 10,000 concurrent viewers for Overwatch 2. Typically attracting around 28,000 viewers, the game now averages about 18,000 simultaneous viewers, representing a significant decrease of 35.7% since the launch of Marvel Rivals.
During the recent holiday break, it’s expected that more people would have free time to watch popular games like Overwatch 2. However, surprisingly, the number of viewers for Overwatch 2 livestreams has been decreasing instead. On the flip side, the game Rivals is experiencing a surge in concurrent viewership with over 60,000 viewers tuning in at the time of this writing.
Marvel Rivals has made a significant impact in the gaming world due to its vibrant visual aesthetic and diverse character lineup. The addition of a new map themed around vampires, as well as the inclusion of the entire Fantastic Four, adds even more excitement to NetEase’s hero shooter. Although it appears to have several advantages over Blizzard’s offering, one might wonder if Blizzard’s dedicated fanbase will eventually fade away.
