Marvel Pauses Development on 3 TV Shows, Including Nova

Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. are no longer a priority for Marvel Television.

According to a recent report from Deadline, Marvel Television has paused development on Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. at this time.

As a gamer reading up on the latest news, I came across an interesting piece stating that those projects weren’t formally approved yet, but there’s a chance they might see the light of day someday. The studio is just focusing on other matters for now.

It appeared that Nova was the most advanced in its development stage, since it was revealed in December 2024 that Ed Bernero had been appointed as the head writer and executive producer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series.

Strange Academy and Terror, Inc., meanwhile, were both rumored to be in the works for some time; however, there was never any kind of official announcement made on either project.

Why is Marvel pausing development on Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc.?

The article from Deadline mentions that the decision is a reflection of a recent change in the way Marvel produces television. Earlier, they approached series development similarly to features, announcing a slate and mainly producing what was hinted at. However, a few years ago, their leadership chose to revamp the development process as they were also updating their Daredevil series, Born Again.

Marvel Studios prefers creating multiple potential projects, even though not all of them get produced. Their strategy involves hiring writers to progress these prospective shows up to the stage of having a pilot script. After this point, the studio evaluates whether it’s worthwhile to proceed with the project.

Besides the potential for burnout on superhero stories and an excess of content, as well as a shrinking market, causing a reduction in the number of films produced annually, Deadline’s article explains that the studio scaled back its output significantly.

2025 will see the debut of Daredevil: Born Again in March, followed by Ironheart in June. Additionally, shows like Eyes of Wakanda, Marvel Zombies, and Wonder Man are slated for release at some point in 2025 as well.
