Fans of superhero games have faced numerous disappointments lately, with the cancellation of Electronic Arts’ Black Panther game and the closure of Monolith Productions, who were working on Wonder Woman. But don’t despair! If you’re open to exploring beyond big-name console games, there’s a lot of fun to be had. Virtual Reality enthusiasts should look forward to Deadpool VR as the standout title for Meta Quest this year. Meanwhile, indie game fans can get excited about Marvel Cosmic Invasion.
Marvel Cosmic Invasion, created by Tribute Games, bears resemblance to their previous work, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. This side-scrolling beat ’em up is reminiscent of classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s, boasting a chunky pixel art style, much like your favorite retro games, and a combo counter that tallies your sustained attacks. In our recent playthrough at Summer Game Fest, we had a chance to traverse through two stages using several playable characters.
Initially, the complete game offers a total of 15 playable characters, but the demonstration version we tested only made half of them available. Each character in the game, whether hero or villain, possesses unique basic attacks and special abilities. However, you can generally divide the characters into two main categories: those who have flying capabilities, and those who don’t.
It could seem that characters capable of flying possess an obvious edge, but the reality isn’t as straightforward as it appears. Characters like Phyla-Vell and Storm may fly (or rather, hover a few feet above the ground), but they aren’t as nimble as their ground-based counterparts. However, having the ability to create some space between yourself and the vast horde of villains in Cosmic Invasion has its benefits, and there are even enemies that prefer to operate in the skies.
While flying characters might initially seem superior, it’s not always the case. Characters like Phyla-Vell and Storm can fly but aren’t as agile on the ground. But having the ability to move away from a large number of villains in Cosmic Invasion is useful, and some enemies also prefer to stay airborne.
From a fan’s perspective, it’s truly exhilarating to step into the boots of Marvel icons like Captain America and Wolverine. The raw power of tearing foes apart with Wolverine’s claws or hurling Captain America’s iconic shield into an adversary’s face is a sensation that never fails to satisfy. When playing Cosmic Invasion cooperatively, coordinated teams can utilize special moves to hurl enemies skyward or slam them into the ground. I can only imagine the skill and synchronicity of top-tier players, who might even toss enemies back and forth like hot potatoes. One player could dominate the skies while the other handles the ground forces, creating a dance of destruction that’s both spectacular and effective.
Astute readers may have observed that so far, we’ve left Spider-Man and Venom out of the discussion, and there’s a reason for that: they occupy a unique position, being characters that straddle the line. They can dominate the entire screen due to their hybrid nature, although it’s important to note that their web-swinging won’t maintain their flight indefinitely. If you’re a fan of combos and vintage fighting games, these two should be on your radar because they excel at prolonging combos compared to other characters we’ve showcased. The potential for advanced gameplay is evident, especially since each player gets to select two heroes for battle (in a tag-team format) and instantly switch between them.
There’s still much left to uncover – I can’t share many details about the plot or main antagonist just yet, but it’s worth noting that the encounter with Taskmaster (who copies your superhero’s fighting style) was an enjoyable touch. From what has been revealed so far, Marvel Cosmic Invasion appears to be a delightful blend of classic brawling games and the vast, evolving universe of Marvel.
This year, the Marvel Cosmic Invasion game will be released on various platforms including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox consoles, and computers running Windows operating systems.
