As a fan who has closely followed the development and controversy surrounding Netflix’s limited series “Baby Reindeer,” I find myself deeply intrigued by this ongoing saga. The latest twist, with Fiona Harvey suing Netflix for defamation among other charges, adds another layer to an already complex story.
The situation between “Martha,” alleged to be the real one, and Netflix over their limited series “Baby Reindeer” continues to unfold and become more complex, despite the show’s release on Netflix several months ago.
1. Actor-creator Richard Gadd, known for Baby Reindeer, has voiced his backing for Netflix following a lawsuit filed by Fiona Harvey (the character portrayed as an alleged stalker) against the streaming service in June.
In a detailed 21-page correspondence, Gadd clarifies that Martha Scott is distinct from Fiona Harvey, emphasizing that “Baby Reindeer” is a dramatic piece rather than an accurate account of events and emotions. He explains that the work is fictionalized, not meant to mirror real facts or experiences.
As a devoted fan of Gadd’s work on the Baby Reindeer play and subsequent series, I can share from my perspective how he approached naming characters during the creative process. To clarify, throughout the writing journey, I noticed an intentional absence of Harvey’s name in any form within the script or the series.
Fiona Harvey sued Netflix for Martha depiction in Baby Reindeer
A few weeks following Harvey’s lawsuit against Netflix for allegations such as defamation, emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violation of her right to privacy, Jessica Gunning’s portrayal of Martha in the miniseries received backing from Gadd. This character is claimed by Harvey to be based on herself.
In the complaint, it is stated that Defendants spread falsehoods about Harvey to over 50 million people globally. Among these untruths were claims that Harvey had been convicted of stalking twice and was imprisoned for five years, as well as allegations that he sexually assaulted Gadd. The Defendants continued to disseminate these fabricated tales since they believed it made for a more captivating narrative, which in turn generated revenue.
Some viewers believed that the unnamed stalker in “Baby Reindeer” could be none other than Harvey, based on similarities they saw between certain scenes in the show and Harvey’s old social media content. Despite Harvey not being explicitly mentioned in the series, this theory gained popularity among fans.
Harvey then appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored for an exclusive interview.
In this seven-episode journey, I find myself embodying a fictionalized version of Donny, a stand-up comedian, inspired by the real-life exploits of the man himself. The narrative unfolds around an act of kindness that sets off a chilling and twisted fixation. Interestingly enough, this dark obsession earned me the moniker “Baby Reindeer,” bestowed upon me by none other than my relentless stalker.
All seven episodes of Baby Reindeer are available to stream on Netflix.
