The renowned actress, Marlee Matlin, has given numerous striking performances throughout her career that extends close to four decades. She made history by becoming the first deaf actor to win an Oscar, which she received for her exceptional role as Sarah Norman in the romantic drama film “Children of a Lesser God.” During this movie, she shared the screen with William Hurt, whom she was involved with romantically off-screen at that time. In a fresh documentary titled “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” the actress from Reasonable Doubts recounted the night she received her Oscar and discussed her apprehension as she accepted the award from Hurt.

Marlee Matlin’s documentary “Not Alone Anymore” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday. This documentary offers insights into Matlin’s career in entertainment and her life off-screen. During a two-year relationship with Hurt, Matlin claims that Hurt abused her. At the time of filming Children of a Lesser God, Matlin was 19 years old while Hurt was 35.
1985 saw Hurt take home the Best Actor Academy Award for “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” The following year, it was an honor to be the one handing over the Oscar to Marlee Matlin. Following the release of the memoir, Hurt expressed a statement saying that in his memory, he and Marlee Matlin “extended apologies and made significant efforts to mend our lives.” He went on to acknowledge that he regrets any harm caused and believes they both have evolved. He expresses nothing but well-wishes for Marlee and her family.
Passed away in March 2022, at the age of 71, following difficulties from advanced prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
