Mark Hamill Tells Fans Not To Expect His Return In ‘Star Wars’

Summary

  • Mark Hamill is stepping back from his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars
  • His last live-action appearance was in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
  • New Star Wars projects are underway, including Starfighter (2027) and The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026)

2027 will bring the premiere of the new movie titled “New Jedi Order“. Unfortunately for fans, Mark Hamill has decided to no longer portray Luke Skywalker in this film, as he shared in a recent interview with ComicBook.com. Fans should therefore not anticipate his reappearance in any future episodes or screenings related to the Star Wars saga.

He thanked George Lucas for allowing him to join the film, which was initially referred to as “the most costly low-budget movie ever made,” and has since grown into a well-known franchise worldwide. Hamill noted that he and his colleagues never anticipated it would become such an enduring franchise and cultural phenomenon. However, he believes that the focus should be on the future and the new characters, as he appreciates his time in the series but feels it’s time to move forward.

In the movie “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker”, he made his significant reappearance as a Force spirit, aiding Rey in her decisive battle against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Following this, he merged with the Force. Recalling his exit in “The Last Jedi”, Hamill humorously remarked, “When I vanished, I left my robes behind. Let me tell you now, I won’t be making another appearance as a bare Force ghost.

Despite Hamill stepping away from his Luke Skywalker character, his indelible mark on the Star Wars universe continues to be evident. Fortunately, enthusiasts have plenty to anticipate with a number of upcoming ventures – such as Star Wars: “Starfighter,” directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, set five years after the sequel saga and slated for 2027 release, and “The Mandalorian & Grogu” debuting in 2026 with Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White.
