Mark Hamill, a renowned figure from the Star Wars universe, has shared thoughts on an alternate backstory he devised for Luke Skywalker while working on The Last Jedi. In a recent conversation, Hamill discussed the profoundly sad sequence of events he visualized to explain Luke’s seclusion, explained his differences with the movie’s final plotline, and talked about reconciling his depiction of the Jedi Master with Rian Johnson’s interpretation of the character.
Mark Hamill reveals alternate idea for Luke Skywalker’s Star Wars backstory
On the Jesse Thorn-hosted Bullseye podcast, Hamill shared an approach to explain Luke’s dissatisfaction with the Jedi. To make it relatable, he developed a backstory where Luke renounces the Force following a heart-wrenching personal loss within his family.
As a gamer, I often ponder what could cause someone to abandon a lifelong dedication, even if it’s like a religious vow, such as being a Jedi. In this case, it was the power of love for a woman. So, he falls in love, gives up his Jedi ways, they have a child together. Tragically, their toddler finds an unattended lightsaber, accidentally activates it, and dies instantly. The grief overwhelms the mother so much that she takes her own life.
In contrast to Rian Johnson’s movie, our story sees Luke retreating to Ahch-To following a brief contemplation about killing his nephew Ben Solo, due to a perceived darkness within him. Despite not carrying out his plan, this encounter strains their relationship and plays a role in Ben’s transformation into Kylo Ren. Feeling defeated by his perceived failure, Luke decides that the Jedi Order should cease to exist, leading him into exile.
During the filming process, Hamill voiced his dissent against the main storyline. He told Johnson, “Rian, I watched entire planets get destroyed. Instead, Luke should have become more steadfast in the face of hardship, not double down.” Later on, Hamill admitted that he probably should have kept quiet about his reservations.
Additionally, he mentioned during another conversation that it’s improbable for him to rejoin the series again. In essence, his sentiments were, “I’ve had my moment in the spotlight. I’m grateful for it, but I firmly believe they should concentrate on the future and the fresh faces.
