Since the debut of Donkey Kong arcade game, skilled players have long been aware of the ‘kill screen’ on Level 22’s initial board, which quickly eliminates Jumpman (Mario) shortly after level start. This was believed to be an unbeatable barrier in the game, limiting the number of points players could accumulate before the game concluded. However, this notion has been challenged recently by speedrunner Kosmic, who found a peculiar glitch enabling him to progress a few levels beyond the original kill screen to a new and currently inaccessible one.
Kosmic posted a video explaining the infamous Donkey Kong arcade game’s original kill screen, demonstrating how to reach it, and revealing his long-awaited success in surpassing the level for the first time since its creation 44 years ago. The kill screen, specific to the competitive version of Donkey Kong, occurs due to the game’s calculation of bonus values on each stage. Once this value becomes zero, the character, Jumpman, perishes. However, the game’s mathematical calculations loop around at a certain point, leading to a glitch where it appears as though the player has 4000 steps to complete the level when in reality they only have 400… or four more attempts before Mario meets his demise.
Kosmic surpassed the game’s challenging final screen by exploiting a secret flaw found in the Japanese versions of the game. Players uncovered a technique on faulty ladders that allowed them to climb infinitely: tap up, then down, and then back up again. This glitch also seemed to make Jumpman invincible while he was still climbing. By utilizing this trick along with another glitch where victory is registered if you reach a specific height, Kosmic outsmarted the game before the Bonus counter could eliminate him. However, Kosmic managed to conquer a few more levels, but eventually encountered another final screen that he’s currently unsure of how to overcome.
This timeless masterpiece of classic gaming and record-breaking achievements now offers players a chance to set even more records, thanks to the insights provided by Kosmic. As we explore fresh opportunities with this nearly 40-year-old game, keep an eye out for further developments in the world of Classic Donkey Kong!
