Marco star Unni Mukundan talks about brutality in Malayalam cinema, ‘Violence has been a part of human evolution’

Currently enjoying a wave of success following the release of his recent movie, “Marco,” directed by Haneef Adeni, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan is being lauded by audiences nationwide. This film made its debut in December of the previous year and has been showered with appreciation from fans across India.

The movie widely recognized as one of India’s most violent films has ignited discussions among film enthusiasts worldwide, particularly about the type of violence portrayed on screen. In a recent interview with Baradwaj Rangan for Galatta Plus, Unni Mukundan commented on this debate by stating, “Marco only displays a small fraction of the violence that exists in our society.

In simpler terms, the actor from Malikappuram explained that violence has been a significant aspect of human development throughout history and continues to be present in our society today. He emphasized that maintaining peace often requires conflict, and survival is our fundamental objective. However, he didn’t advocate for portraying violence on screen but acknowledged its existence within our contemporary society.

Marco watches a movie centered around a tough criminal who seeks vengeance for his stepbrother’s murder. The film takes place in the crime-ridden streets of Kochi, with family dynamics serving as the main plot driver. Before its premiere, it was given an ‘A’ rating by the CBFC and has been likened to other intense films such as Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s “Animal” and Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s “Kill”.

The film is the fourth directorial project by Haneef Adeni, and it represents his second collaboration with Jai Ganesh actor following Mikhael.

For the movie, Marco received financial backing from Cubes Entertainment, Chandru Selvaraj handled the cinematography, and renowned editor Shameer Muhammed took charge of editing. Notably, Ravi Basrur, known for his work on KGF, was responsible for composing the film’s music.
