As a die-hard fan of Ilaiyaraaja’s magical symphonies that have breathed life into countless films over the decades, I find myself deeply invested in this ongoing saga between the maestro and the makers of Manjummel Boys.
The dispute between well-known composer Ilaiyaraaja and the producers of the Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys appears to have escalated, as it seems no agreement has been made yet according to current updates.
At first, Ilaiyaraaja took legal action against the producers by sending a formal warning due to the unapproved usage of his song “Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan,” which he created for the 1991 Tamil movie Guna. He asserted that this song was wrongfully added to Manjummel Boys without first acquiring proper authorization, despite being acknowledged in the film’s credits.
Previous information indicated that the dispute was settled, with the producers agreeing to give Ilaiyaraaja 60 lakh rupees as reimbursement. This amount was considered a substantial decrease from his original claim of 2 crores, which he supported by referring to the film’s financial prosperity. After talks, it seemed that both sides had found common ground, enabling them to proceed without future disagreements.
It seems, according to a Times of India report, that the situation may be more intricate than previously thought. The report indicates that Ilaiyaraaja’s legal representative claimed ignorance about any settlement, while his PR team affirmed that no talks concerning the issue had transpired.
As an ardent fan, I’ve been following this case closely, and it seems my understanding is getting muddled. Earlier, we were led to believe a resolution was in sight, but now, it appears that might not be the case after all. What’s more intriguing is the recent reports about the Manjummel Boys production team claiming they obtained the rights to the song from several audio labels, including Pyramid Studios. This new development only intensifies the ongoing dispute, leaving me and many others eagerly waiting for a definitive resolution.
The uncertainty about the resolution of the issue has ignited a heated discussion among the public, as some are expressing dissatisfaction towards Ilaiyaraaja for choosing to sue a budding film crew, instead of encouraging their artistic endeavors.
Simultaneously, the Malayalam survival thriller movie titled “Manjummel Boys,” helmed by Chidambaram, hit the screens on February 22, 2024. This film is inspired by a real-life event from 2006, recounting the ordeal of a group of friends residing in Manjummel, close to Kochi. Their leisurely excursion to Kodaikanal takes an unexpected dark turn when one of them becomes trapped inside the Guna Caves, colloquially known as The Devil’s Kitchen.
The movie showcases a diverse group of actors, such as Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, and Ganapathi S. Poduval.
