Manifest creator Jeff Rake offers spinoff update on 828 day: 'Keep the faith'

As a dedicated Manifester who has been following the series since its inception, I can confidently say that Jeff Rake’s recent update has brought a glimmer of hope back into our hearts. After all, we’ve been on this 828 journey together for far too long to give up now!

Nearly a year following Manifest’s conclusion in June 2023 on Netflix, its creator Jeff Rake shared exciting news for fans. Ever since the acclaimed supernatural drama series wrapped up on its “final day” in June, enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for a spinoff to continue some of the storylines left unresolved. And guess what? There’s still a possibility that could happen!

On August 28th (also known as day 828 for some enthusiasts), Rake posted an update about a possible spinoff series for Manifest fans on social media, keeping their anticipation high. While there’s no official go-ahead for the follow-up series yet, Rake and his writing team are actively working to bring the desired spinoff to life.

Multiple Manifest enthusiasts responded to Rake’s post about maintaining hope with eagerness, expressing thanks for the long-awaited update on the progress of the anticipated spinoff and mirroring his actions in keeping that hope alive. Generally, the feeling among the fanbase was appreciation and a refreshed sense of reassurance that the team is persisting in their efforts to launch the spinoff.

Is a Manifest spinoff necessary?

It’s not yet determined what tale a spinoff could narrate or which characters might reappear in a potential spin-off series, as many main storylines reached a satisfying conclusion in the final episode. However, with the exception of Michaela and Zeke (who are busy with NBC’s upcoming show The Hunting Party), the enigma of Flight 828 and the vanishing of several passengers who perished during the incident continues to be unresolved.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but wonder which network or streaming platform might consider green-lighting a spinoff for ‘Manifest’. While shows like NBC’s ‘New Amsterdam’ saw their success on Netflix pave the way for a sequel spinoff on NBC, and ‘Suits’ is set to make a comeback in summer 2023, there hasn’t been an official peep about ‘Manifest’ joining this trend. The buzz around a spinoff seems to have started among fans, with Rake being the one addressing these rumors directly.

As a dedicated gamer, I can vouch that my fascination for “Manifest” wasn’t diminished when it hit Netflix post its NBC cancellation. In fact, the show was such a smash hit that Netflix decided to give it another chance with a final season of 20 episodes. Unfortunately, despite this continued success, the Netflix-exclusive and original season didn’t exactly set the streaming world alight as it did before Season 4. Instead, it received a more subdued response compared to the mega-streaming frenzy that preceded it.

From a perspective of someone who’s a fan of the show but wasn’t overly fond of its last season and finale (believe me, there are many others like me!), a spin-off series doesn’t seem essential right away. The original series told the story it needed to tell, and creating more content risks rehashing ground that the series has already explored. Perhaps some time will pass before we find the perfect narrative and the ideal moment to return to the Flight 828 universe.
