Wondering what all the commotion was about regarding Mandy Moore‘s GoFundMe campaign amidst the ongoing LA fire emergency? The catastrophic wildfires have been causing destruction across Southern California, leaving many homes in ruins and forcing countless people to relocate. Although several celebrities like Adam Brody, Anna Faris, and Sebastian Harrison have suffered property losses, Mandy Moore found herself at the center of controversy when she appealed to the public for aid to help her family during this difficult time through a crowdfunding campaign.
Here’s everything about the backlash and her response.
Mandy Moore addresses backlash over GoFundMe campaign
On Thursday, Mandy Moore shared an Instagram message (which she later removed) about her in-laws, Griff and Kit Goldsmith, who suffered significant losses. In this post, she asked her followers to support her family by donating to a GoFundMe campaign aimed at helping them rebuild.
As they are about to welcome their first child in just a few weeks, they require our help more urgently than before,” Moore pointed out. She further elaborated on the tough circumstances her brother-in-law is facing, stating, “Griff, who is a touring musician, has unfortunately lost all his drums and percussion equipment he uses to earn a living. It’s truly a difficult time for him.
Despite her call for donations on the mentioned GoFundMe campaign, Moore’s plea has faced significant backlash from many people. Critics argue that it is inconsistent of her to seek financial assistance from everyday workers rather than funding the cause herself.
In response to the criticism concerning her GoFundMe request, Mandy Moore has expressed on Instagram that it’s unhelpful and lacking empathy for people to speculate whether she and her family are using the funds for themselves or based on estimated wealth found online. She clarified that the campaign was initiated by a friend of theirs (Matt) and she is sharing it because people have asked how they can assist them. Moore also added that they too have lost much of their life in a fire, and she politely asks critics to mind their own business, as there’s no obligation for anyone to contribute. This information was reported by USA Today.
Amidst all the criticism, I’m thrilled to share that our GoFundMe campaign has surpassed the $200,000 mark! But, it’s important to note that we’ve decided to close the door for new donations at this time. The support has been overwhelming and truly heartwarming.
