As a passionate reader and follower of Malayalam literature, I am deeply saddened by the passing of MT Vasudevan Nair, a literary giant who graced our world with his timeless works. His stories have been a part of my life since I was a young girl, captivating me with their profound insights into human nature and the soul of Kerala.
91-year-old Malayalam author MT Vasudevan Nair, renowned for his novels and screenplays, passed away on December 25 following a cardiac arrest. He had been receiving treatment in Kozhikode before his unfortunate demise. His wife Saraswathy and daughter Aswathy were present as he took his final breath. As per Onmanorama, his funeral will be held today at 5 PM at the Mavoor Road crematorium.
Until 4 PM, people are welcome to pay their respects at the residence of the late novelist, where many distinguished individuals have already come to express their condolences. Notable figures such as actor Mohanlal and writer MN Karassery were among the first to arrive, followed by Minister AK Saseendran and MP Shafi Parambil.
As stated in the report, the Kerala administration declared a period of two days as a mark of respect. Additionally, it’s been made known that, in accordance with his requests, there won’t be any public display of his physical remains.
Immediately following the announcement of his death online, the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, shared his condolences via his social media account.
Upon the death of MT Vasudevan Nair, a towering figure in Malayalam literature, we’ve been left with a void. His works, which transcended the boundaries of our language and reached global acclaim, truly made him a cultural legend. Through his timeless stories, he beautifully encapsulated the spirit of Kerala.
His unwavering dedication to both secular principles and the wellbeing of all people creates an impactful legacy that will continue to motivate future generations. My sincere sympathies extend to his family and the broader cultural circle.

Vasudevan Nair played a substantial role in both cinema and literature, directing seven films and penning screenplays for approximately 54 movies. He received the National Film Award for Best Screenplay an impressive four times due to his exceptional talent.
In 1995, he was bestowed with the Jnanpith Award, a prestigious recognition for his significant impact on Malayalam literature. Subsequently, in 2005, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, an honor given for distinguished services to the arts.
