Today, January 26, Malayalam filmmaker Shafi sadly passed away at the age of 56. As reported by Mathrubhumi, the director was recently admitted to a hospital due to internal bleeding. He had been battling critical health issues stemming from insomnia and severe headaches.
Following the completion of necessary medical examinations, it was determined that he suffered from a brain bleed. Consequently, they urgently took him into surgery. Regrettably, his condition worsened, and he required assistance with breathing through a mechanical ventilator.
Shafi leaves behind his wife, Shamila, as well as his daughters Salma and Aleema. As stated in the report, his body will be brought home, and people are invited to pay their last respects at the Cochin Service Cooperative Bank Auditorium in Manappattiparambu. The funeral service is scheduled for 4 PM at the Karukappilly Juma Masjid cemetery. Those wishing to express their condolences can do so at the auditorium between 9:30 AM and 1 PM.
Shafi, often recognized as Rasheed MH by name, was a renowned Indian film director, particularly active in Malayalam cinema. Born on February 18, 1968, he gained recognition for his exceptional skill in directing comedic films within the industry. Moreover, he attempted his hand at Tamil cinema with one production.
In the year 2001, Shafi launched his directing career with “One Man Show.” Coming from a family deeply entrenched in cinema, his elder brother Rafi was one half of the acclaimed screenwriting team Rafi Mecartin, and his uncle was the celebrated director Siddique. Prior to stepping into the director’s chair, Shafi accumulated film industry knowledge by working alongside directors Rajasenan and the duo Rafi Mecartin during the mid-1990s.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve always been captivated by the cinematic genius that is Shafi. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has masterfully directed more than ten films, many of which have graced our screens as beloved blockbusters. Among his most celebrated creations are Kalyanaraman, a film featuring Dileep in the lead role, and Thommanum Makkalum, where Mammootty took center stage.
