Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith to step down as Kerala Chalachitra Academy Chairman after allegations by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra?

As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in the entertainment industry, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent allegations levied against Malayalam director and actor Ranjith. The experiences of Sreelekha Mitra resonate all too painfully with stories I’ve heard from countless women in this industry, who have faced similar inappropriate behavior.

It seems that Malayalam filmmaker and actor Ranjith might step down from his position as Chairman of Kerala Film Academy, due to the severe accusations made against him by actress Sreelekha Mitra. The demand for his resignation has been growing in response to these allegations.

According to a recent article in On Manorama, Kerala’s Culture and Films Minister, Saji Cherian, subtly suggested that filmmaker Ranjith might choose to step down from his position. The minister added that, while the government has not asked for Ranjith’s resignation, it is prepared to consider a written complaint from the alleged victim if one is submitted.

Initially, the minister faced criticism following his statement that no action against the filmmaker would be initiated unless an official complaint was submitted. Later, the minister indicated that strong measures would be implemented against the actor-director if the accusations were substantiated.

In case you didn’t know, Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra has accused a filmmaker of inappropriate behavior towards her during the making of Paleri Manikyam in 2009. According to news sources, she claimed that the director made her feel uncomfortable.

According to the actress’ account, there was a gathering organized by the filmmaker for the cast and crew of one movie. At this event, he invited her to his room supposedly for a project discussion. Yet, upon entering, the filmmaker began acting inappropriately towards her, even touching her hair and neck.

Responding to the accusations, the director flat-out refuted the actress’ statements and explained that her unsuitability for the role was why she wasn’t chosen for the movie. He emphasized that this decision had nothing to do with any misconduct on his part.

The recent remarks against the actor-director come at a time in the Malayalam cinema industry where the Hema Committee report has highlighted various misgivings and atrocities in the workplace, especially against women.
