As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for societal trends and a heart for justice, I find myself deeply troubled by the recurring incidents of sexual misconduct within the Malayalam film industry. The latest arrest of Edavela Babu, a former secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes, is yet another sad reminder that the entertainment world is not immune to such heinous acts.
The well-known Malayalam actor and former member of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes, Edavela Babu, was taken into custody following an interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding a sexual assault allegation. According to a report in Onmanorama, the questioning lasted for three hours before his arrest on September 25. However, he was subsequently released due to the anticipatory bail he had received from the Ernakulam Sessions court prior to his arrest.
Following his apprehension, the authorities brought him in for a medical examination at Ernakulam General Hospital. Subsequently, he was set free. Edavela Babu finds himself charged under sections 354 (for acts amounting to sexual assault), 376 (rape), and 509 (behavior intended to offend a woman’s decency) of the Indian Penal Code, following an allegation made by a female actress based in Kochi.
For those not familiar, Edavela Babu found himself in a contentious situation when he was accused of sexual misconduct by the former Malayalam actress Minu Muneer. This allegation was part of a police report (FIR) filed against seven individuals, which also included Mukesh and Jayasurya.
Minu Muneer shared on Facebook that she experienced a number of incidents involving physical and verbal abuse from Mukesh, Maniyan pilla raju, idavela Babu, Jayasoorya, Adv Chandrasekaran, the production controller noble, and vichu in the Malayalam film industry.
Additionally, she shared details of a past event where she experienced both physical and emotional mistreatment back in 2013. Regardless of the hardships, Minu persevered with her work, but ultimately felt compelled to resign due to the torment becoming too unendurable.
Since the publication of the contentious Hema Committee report on August 19, the Malayalam film industry in particular has faced criticism. Following this report, a Special Investigation team was established and numerous women have come forward to share their distressing stories.
In addition to well-known figures such as Mukesh, Nivin Pauly, Siddique, Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, Maniyanpilla Raju (directors), Ranjith and V.K. Prakash, production executives like Vichu, Baburaj, and Tulasidas have also been implicated in allegations of sexual misconduct by several women who have come forward with complaints.
