Mahershala Ali’s Blade Picks Up Dubious Distinction as MCU Phase 5 Ends

After the airing of the last three episodes of Ironheart, Marvel Studios has wrapped up Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Out of all the projects for Phase 5 that were initially revealed at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, only Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie hasn’t been shown yet because it has faced several creative hurdles since its announcement.

What is the current status of Mahershala Ali’s Blade?

For six years following Kevin Feige’s unexpected announcement of the Oscar-winning actor’s casting as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the project has been stuck in developmental purgatory. However, it is said that the actor is still connected to portray the anti-hero, a role he briefly filled with a voice appearance in 2021’s Eternals. Although the official premiere of this character remains uncertain, the beloved Daywalker made his MCU debut last year in Deadpool & Wolverine, with Wesley Snipes reprising his legendary role from the past.

Currently, there’s no designated director or set release date for this project yet. Originally, directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, as well as writers Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Starrbury, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson, were involved with the film. However, due to several postponements, it’s uncertain if Mia Goth and Milan Ray are still part of the cast following the confirmation that Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo have left the production.

Apart from focusing on “Blade,” Marvel Studios is also said to be working on a movie featuring the Midnight Sons. A recent whisper in the wind hints that Ghost Rider could potentially lead this supernatural team. This film is inspired by the Marvel Comics series, which was introduced in 1993 by Howard Mackie, Andy Kubert, and Bobby Chase. The story revolves around a group of supernatural heroes, including Ghost Rider, Blade, Moon Knight, Elsa Bloodstone, Doctor Strange, and others.
