Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy collaboration among reveals at MagicCon 2024

As a long-time Magic: The Gathering enthusiast who grew up playing Final Fantasy games, this collaboration feels like a dream come true! I remember spending countless hours leveling up my characters and casting spells in both worlds, and now they’re merging? It’s like the ultimate crossover event for me. I can already picture myself summoning Bahamut or Shiva on the battlefield with Cloud or Terra by my side!

2021 saw an action-packed MagicCon, our annual gathering honoring everything related to Magic: The Gathering, bursting at the seams with surprises and thrills. Among the many unveilings during this year’s Las Vegas event, one particularly significant announcement stood out – a new collaboration set! Wizards of the Coast announced their partnership with Square Enix, promising a special booster set centered around the enchanting realms of Final Fantasy.

In the reveal video, Zakeel Gordon, a Product Architect at Wizards of the Coast, expressed that this collaboration transcends simple card play. It’s about honoring decades of iconic characters, epic tales, and unforgettable instances from one of the most cherished franchises in gaming history.

This upcoming collection showcases characters spanning the entire numbered timeline of the franchise, including Cloud (Final Fantasy 7), Terra (Final Fantasy 6), Lightning (Final Fantasy 13), and Noctis (Final Fantasy 15). Additionally, it will have many cards inspired by monsters, summons, and other creatures/phenomena throughout the series. Furthermore, you can play this set online through Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Over the course of the upcoming year, Magic: The Gathering is set to release several significant expansion packs. Among them are:

  • Innistrad Remastered: Players will revisit Innistrad on January 24.
  • Aetherdrift: It’s a race to the finish as Magic players pick from a variety of racers. This will release on February 14.
  • Tarkir: Dragonstorm: Players return to Tarkir and encounter new clans and reborn dragons. This set releases on April 11.
  • Edge of Eternities: Explore The Edge, a strange realm sitting at the very bordder of the Blind Eternities. Venture through the surrounding galaxies when this set arrives on August 1.
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Yes, the wall-crawler has come to Magic: The Gathering. This is part of a new multi-year collaboration with Marvel that will arrive sometime in 2025.

Wizards of the Coast has plans to release another Universes Beyond set sometime in 2025. For updates about what’s coming up next year, check out their Magic: The Gathering website. Regarding the Final Fantasy set, mark your calendars for its arrival on June 13th (Friday).
