Earlier this year, it became public knowledge that Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro are teaming up to develop both a film and TV series inspired by Magic: The Gathering, which is a widely-known trading card game initially conceptualized by Richard Garfield.

At the time, it was made known that the franchise would kick off with a live-action film, but further specifics weren’t disclosed yet.

What do we know about the live-action Magic: The Gathering movie?

According to the deadline, Johnson is currently favored to helm the live-action Magic: The Gathering movie.

According to Deadline’s article, there has been no response from the studios regarding their offer to Johnson, since discussions are still in preliminary stages. However, it is known that Johnson is the preferred choice to direct the project, but neither the stance on the material nor the identity of the scriptwriter have been disclosed yet.

Back in 2013, I stepped into the director’s chair for my first time with The Dirties. After that, I delivered Operation Avalanche in 2016. Then, finally, I brought BlackBerry to life in 2023. This film features Jay Baruchel as Mike Lazaridis and Glenn Howerton as Jim Balsillie. Critics praised it when it hit the screens and it even garnered a few awards.

More recently, Johnson created a film titled “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” which is a humorous take on time travel. This movie debuted at South by Southwest this year and has since been bought by Neon, but a nationwide release date has yet to be announced.

A release date for the live-action Magic: The Gathering movie has not been announced.
