Well, well, well! If I could wrap my hands around this news, I’d hug it tighter than a long-lost friend. Mafia, the game that defined my teenage years and left an indelible mark on the gaming community, is finally getting a fourth installment! And not just any installment, but one set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily – where it all began for our beloved Don Salieri.
In the past, Mafia was the trendiest game among children. Every kid who wanted to be considered ‘cool’ played it, while those who didn’t were often left out. Mafia was so popular that at one point, even surpassing GTA in popularity because it seemed more authentic – although as kids we didn’t truly understand the concept, it definitely felt rawer or edgier to us.
Many individuals are yearning for a newly developed Mafia game, as the last one came out in 2017 and didn’t quite meet expectations. While the Mafia Definitive Edition released in 2020 was impressive, there’s still a craving for something new and innovative. In other words, we’re eagerly waiting for more exciting content.
It’s great news indeed, as the production of Mafia 4 has been officially announced. Let me share what we currently know about Mafia 4.
Update (August 21, 2024) Mafia: The Old Country Revealed At Gamescom
During the Gamescom Opening Night Live event, we got our first glimpse of the official trailer for Mafia 4, which is called “Mafia: A Journey to the Homeland.”
This prequel will take place in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily.
As for the release date, we only know that it will be in 2025
The game will be playable on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC
Update (June 13, 2024) Mafia 4 Was Not Revealed At Summer Game Fest
Regrettably, Mafia 4 wasn’t unveiled during the 2024 Summer Game Fest held on June 7, contrary to earlier speculations by the Czech gaming site Vortex. The much-awaited announcement was noticeably absent at the event.
As a gaming enthusiast who’s been keeping an eye on the scene, I reckon it’s not too far-fetched to expect a big unveiling from Hanger 13 in the year 2024. They’ve been actively hiring devs for over a year now, so they seem to be gearing up for something significant. Fingers crossed!
Release Date Expectation
In 2020, Hanger 13 wrapped up their last Mafia project, Mafia: Definitive Edition. Given the length of development so far, it seems likely that they’ve been working on the fourth installment for some time. In fact, a 2025 release window appears to be a reasonable prediction.
2025 might be our best prediction given what we know right now, but things can change and it might arrive earlier (perhaps in 2024) or later.
Will Mafia 4 come out before GTA 6?
Mafia 4 Gameplay Details
It seems that Hangar 13, the creators behind Mafia 4, have unintentionally been disclosing information about the game in various directions… through LinkedIn posts.
Stealth System
In a LinkedIn job posting seeking a Principal AI Designer and Lead AI Designer, it’s stated that they are looking for professionals who can work with “Stealth and Combat gameplay loops”. This suggests that the game being developed will incorporate a stealth mechanic.
“Work closely with the AI Lead and relevant stakeholders to ensure delivery of engaging Stealth and Combat gameplay loopsHands on design and development of our combat and non-combat NPCs”
This was probably to be expected.
Possible Multiplayer Mode
The job advertisement for a Senior Systems Designer provides additional details, particularly mentioning preference for “Experience with AAA titles, multiplayer games, or live game design.” This could imply that Mafia 4 may include a multiplayer mode, which would be a first for the series and an exciting addition.
Unreal Engine 5
A recent job posting by Hangar 13 indicates they are utilizing UE5 in the development of an undisclosed, cross-platform game. The position they’re hiring for involves a programmer working on a new project in its early stages that runs on Unreal Engine 5.
Given that it seems extremely uncommon for Hangar 13 to be developing another AAA game besides Mafia 4, it’s reasonable to assume this news pertains to that project. The use of Unreal Engine 5 isn’t particularly shocking, but it’s a smart move on the part of Hangar 13.
Mafia 4 Plot Details
As per Kotaku’s report, we discovered that the working title for Mafia 4 is “Nero.” It seems that this game will be a prequel, focusing on the ascendancy of the Salieri family. If you’re not familiar with the first game, Don Salieri is the Mafia boss you work for who hails from Sicily and later migrates to America.
The narrative we envision will alternate between two time periods – Sicily in the early 1900s and America in the 1950s – similar to The Godfather Part II. This approach will allow us to delve into the past of young Vito Corleone, as well as follow the storyline of his son, Michael Corleone.
The claim that Mafia 4 is partially set in Sicily during the years 1890 to 1920 has been bolstered by XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker, who made this assertion in a recent podcast episode.
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, let me tell you that the new direction for this story is nothing short of brilliant! It’s leagues ahead of what was going on in the third game, and I can honestly say it has rekindled my excitement for the series. The creators have managed to weave an intricate plotline that feels fresh yet familiar, a feat that isn’t easy to achieve in today’s gaming landscape. Kudos to them for taking such a bold step forward!
