Following persistent assertions that Brigitte Macron, the spouse of President Emmanuel Macron of France, is not biologically female, conservative commentator Candace Owens now faces a lawsuit for libel from the couple.

Owens’ Claims

Throughout several podcast discussions, social media posts on platform X, and a video series called “Becoming Brigitte,” US-based conservative influencer Candace Owens strongly asserted, using her own words, that she was prepared to risk her entire professional standing on the belief that the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron is biologically male.

It now seems the couple is ready to take her by her word.

Brigitte Macron, who has three children from her previous marriage with André-Louis Auzière, dismissed accusations about undergoing a gender reassignment as unfounded and malicious. In the context of increased discussion on the treatment of transgender individuals in U.S. and European politics, the Macrons characterized Owens’ comments as an attempt to seek attention and notoriety.

Following Owens, who previously contributed primarily to liberal media outlets prior to 2016, has transitioned into a role as a conservative activist. Since then, she has utilized her influence to propagate numerous unverified claims, including the Apollo moon landing being staged, the Earth being flat, dinosaurs never existing, Israel’s alleged involvement in the 9/11 attacks, and multiple dictators being Jewish in descent, among other contentious theories.

Owens’ Reasoning

Previously, this particular influencer was employed by a few traditional news organizations such as The Daily Wire. However, she parted ways with them following disagreements within the organization and accusations of anti-Semitism.

After these occurrences, Owens has predominantly worked independently, sharing her opinion pieces on various social media platforms, ultimately gaining millions of subscribers. In the course of this work, she has also created content that embraces an existing conspiracy theory suggesting that France’s first lady was actually born as Jean-Michel Trogneux.

In the past, Jean-Michel Trogneux, the older brother of Brigtte Macron (originally known by his maiden name), has been involved in legal proceedings to verify his true identity. Some theories suggest that he either died at a young age under a different identity or was just a figment of imagination, never really existing to begin with, as part of the conspiracy narrative.

Despite two women in France having lost a defamation case against Macron for similar reasons back in 2022, Owens continues to spread these accusations. She maintains that the rumored gender transition of Macron could be the most significant political scandal ever. Now, she finds herself facing a similar trial, which she describes as an unprecedented lawsuit against a mother in America.

Owens’ Potential Consequences

In Delaware, a fresh lawsuit has been initiated. Originally seen as a last resort, it comes from the French presidential pair following persistent requests for the influencer to withdraw her allegations, which seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

The legal team for the two individuals and their families are currently pursuing penalties (punitive damages) from Owens and her businesses, claiming 22 instances of defamation, false light, and implied defamation. The specific amount they’re asking for hasn’t been specified yet, but it could potentially harm Owens financially since she’s lost the backing of her previous employers. This means that her personal insurance would have to cover the expenses in this case.
