M3GAN Director Boards Monster High Movie, Could Be Studio’s Next Barbie

The Monster High movie being made for Mattel and Universal has found its director.

In June 2024, it was revealed that Mattel Films had joined forces with Universal Pictures to produce a real-life Monster High film. This venture stems from Mattel’s well-known toy collection launched in 2010, which centers around the adolescent offspring of timeless monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein.

Who is directing the Monster High movie?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed that Gerard Johnstone will be the director for the Monster High film.

In 2014, Johnstone launched his career as a movie director with Housebound, and since then, he’s gained significant attention within Hollywood after directing M3GAN for Blumhouse in 2022. He is also responsible for directing the upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which is set to hit U.S. theaters on June 27, 2025.

According to the director’s statement, Mattel Studios has shown courage by taking big risks with their intellectual properties, and what excites him about Monster High is the chance to explore various legendary monster tales.

Robbie Brenner, who’s responsible for Barbie production at Mattel, stated, “Gerard’s distinctive perspective and genre-crossing approach are an ideal match for this movie. It aligns perfectly with what we’re developing at Mattel Studios as we collaborate with leading creators to share innovative, surprising tales drawn from our vast collection of brands.

Akiva Goldsman is responsible for writing the script and producing the movie, with Brenner also serving as a producer. Goldsman expressed that Monster High holds a special, personal significance to him because his daughters were big fans of the dolls and their values. He believes Gerard, who is known for his bold, heartfelt work, is the perfect director for this film.

At present, specifics about the plot of the Monster High film are kept confidential. As of now, no actors have been chosen, and there is currently no scheduled release date.
