Lucasfilm Animation Celebrates 20 Years; Announces New Darth Maul Animated Series

Star Wars villain Darth Maul is getting his own animated series according to The Hollywood Reporter

In the upcoming animated series titled “Maul: Shadow Lord,” which premieres on Disney+, the well-known character who made his debut in the 1999 film “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” will take center stage. This announcement was made at Star Wars Celebration on Friday.

During the captivating panel celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation, I found myself in the midst of insightful discussions between Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni and Athena Portillo, vice president of animation. They reminisced about their journey within the animation division, shared anecdotes from working with George Lucas, and delved into the intricacies of the animation process and past successes. However, when the topic shifted to a future project, they opted for the show-don’t-tell approach, surprising us all by unveiling a tantalizing trailer that left the audience eagerly anticipating what’s next.

In 2026, a new show is set to premiere, where we’ll follow the tale of Maul training an apprentice. The actor, Sam Witwer, known for his voice work as the Maul character in past animated shows, will once again step into that role.

This year, I’m thrilled to mark the 20-year anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation! To commemorate this momentous occasion, they’ve unveiled a special video compilation – a heartwarming celebration of two decades of exceptional storytelling and groundbreaking animation.

Disney+ unveiled the upcoming installment of Light & Magic, a documentary series that delves into the history and pioneering visual effects work of Lucasfilm’s renowned visual effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic.

During a presentation held on Friday at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, the trailer and artwork for season two were revealed, giving fans who had traveled there a sneak peek at the series delving into Lucasfilm’s pivotal period – their transition to digital movie-making.

As the Tokyo event kicked off, the third segment of the second season for the documentary series “Light & Magic” became available for streaming only on Disney+.
