In the latest installment of Love Next Door, we kick off with a flashback to the 2007 Seoul National Swimming Championships. Despite Choi Seung-Hyo’s parents being unable to attend, Bae Seok-Ryu cheered him on from the stands. He ended up placing first, earning a spot in the Olympics. As dreams of this momentous event filled his mind, Seung-Hyo was roused from sleep by Seok-Ryu sleeping in the wee hours. Their relationship became strained as Seok-Ryu moved into a house next to hers.

Choi Seung-Hyo embarks on a new project

The morning after, I shared breakfast with my folks, but the silent goodbyes hinted at some family strife and my cooler-than-usual relationship with Mama. At work, I got some awesome news about a client entrusting our firm to manage a senior living facility. Yet, my thoughts were elsewhere – on the exciting prospect of revamping the pool at my old high school, as part of an intriguing project.

Today, I took a well-deserved break from gaming and hung out with my friends Seung-Hyo and Jeong Mo-Eum (Kim Ji-Eun) at a comic book store. It’s amazing how my parents have always given me the freedom to choose my own path, without any pressure.

Bae Seok-Ryu deals with unemployment and stagnant life

Bae Seok-Ryu made the teacher think that she was still employed at US firm Greip, and Seung-Hyo knew this but remained silent. As the teacher requested Seok-Ryu to share her experiences with the current students, she spoke about her work at the company during interactions. When a student inquired whether it was her ideal job, she refuted it, prompting her to ponder over her life.

On their way home, Seok-Ryu ran into Seung-Hyo who insisted they dig up a time capsule they’d buried in school many years earlier. The duo had agreed to revisit it after a decade, but that moment had long since passed. As they got close to unearthing it, Seok-Ryu suggested they call it off. Inside the capsule were letters they had written to their future selves.

Seok-Ryu returned home to find herself stagnant while others were making progress. Meanwhile, Seung-Hyo was gearing up for the renovation of the swimming pool and the construction of a retirement community. The following day, Mo-Eum dealt with an urgent patient who needed hospital attention but faced traffic delays on the way. She noticed a man clearing the road for the ambulance, yet she couldn’t catch a glimpse of his face. Later, she described him as her “ideal type.” Back at work, she received rice cakes from Kang Dan-Oh (Yoon Ji-On) as a token of appreciation.

At a gathering for the senior living community, Seung-Hyo and his partner Yoon Myung-Woo were in attendance. But their shared principles didn’t match those of their clientele who urged him to copy designs from foreign creators. This disagreement escalated into a heated dispute between the two founders.

Personally, Myung-Woo suggested that Seung-Hyo was still clinging to the past, and his swimming career had not met expectations. Hearing this hit him hard, causing a wave of emotions as he departed from the venue. Simultaneously, Seok-Ryu secured an encounter with a top-tier recruiter who presented numerous job offers from esteemed corporations. Upon our paths crossing again, Seung-Hyo witnessed this moment and commented on the effort it took for her to come back. In his opinion, she should avoid going back to the draining job and instead pursue her dreams. Unfortunately, this only added to Seok-Ryu’s resentment, feeling that Seung-Hyo was fortunate to recover and thrive when she struggled.

In a similar situation, Seung-Hyo recalled a tough period in his life. This was when he met with an accident, mere days before competing at the Beijing Olympics. The doctors believed his swimming career was over. However, the next day, Seung-Hyo resolved his disagreement with Myung-Woo and gained a better understanding of Seok-Ryu’s perspective.

1. Towards the close of the episode, Seok-Ryu confided in her teacher that she had resigned from her job. The teacher acknowledged this decision and suggested she meet Seung-Hyo at the pool. As it turned out, Seung-Hyo was unearthing a time capsule and reading aloud a letter Seok-Ryu had written. He then leaped into the pool, recalling Seok-Ryu’s past assistance in helping him emerge from a low point. He encouraged her to rediscover her cheerful demeanor.

1. When Seung-Hyo assisted her, Seok-Ryu, unaware of swimming skills, leaped into the pool. He inquired if she could go back to work overseas and break off their engagement. But Seok-Ryu refused this, bringing comfort to Seung-Hyo. The story concluded with the revelation that Seung-Hyo intended to express his feelings for her through a letter.
