  • Now on view through November 2, the exhibition features over 30 of works from the last 10 years.

For Lorna Simpson, images are open to discussion and interpretation. Known as a trailblazer in conceptual photography, this New York artist is widely admired for her skill at exploring and dissecting our perceptions of identity. By employing text and imagery, she questions established narratives and challenges conventional views. Over the years, Simpson has expanded her prolific body of work, which includes film, photography, and collage. During the past decade, she has ventured into painting, further developing her earlier themes and incorporating fresh visual elements and artistic techniques.

At present, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is showcasing the initial museum exhibition focusing on the painterly phase of Simpson. Entitled “Source Notes“, this display gathers over 30 artworks, offering insights into the artist’s remarkable technical skills and unique ability to reinterpret history in a poetic manner.

Displayed works feature “True Value (2015)” and “Three Figures (2014)”, significant contributions from Simpson’s impressive showcase at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Additionally, “did time elapse” (2024) from her latest series, titled “_Earth and Sky_”, is also on show.

The title indicates that Simpson employs historical artifacts, ranging from old issues of Ebony and Jet to celestial maps and minerals, throughout her work. These pieces are then cut, collaged, and reassembled in a disjointed manner, echoing the artist’s intricate, multilayered creative journey. By incorporating paint, these fragments take on fresh significance, forging connections between past experiences and current realities.

Lorna Simpson: Source Notes is now on view in New York through November 2.
