As a seasoned Outlander fan who has traversed through time alongside Claire and Jamie, I must say that Lord John Grey’s decision to reveal Claire’s past to Jamie was as wise as a kite flying in a hurricane!
In the series ‘Outlander’, it was inevitable that Jamie Fraser would eventually discover about Claire and John. However, it was absolutely incorrect for Lord John Grey to reveal this information immediately to him.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Outlander season 7, episode 12
It was clear from the beginning that it would be inevitable for Jamie to learn about Claire and John’s relationship, including the details of their shared night. After all, such sensitive information was bound to surface. Interestingly, Claire mentioned that she intended to disclose everything to Jamie, but she wanted him to take a bath and eat first before they delved into such personal matters.
It turns out that Claire is acquainted with Jamie. Furthermore, she’s a sympathetic person who was overjoyed at his return. Throughout their relationship, they had agreed on sharing secrets but never lying. Eventually, it was only a matter of time before Jamie would inquire about Lord John Grey and the specifics of their union.
Lord John Grey should have known better in Outlander
Instead of letting Claire inform Jamie initially, Lord John Grey felt it necessary to speak up himself, understanding that she might disclose the information otherwise. He wanted to avoid Jamie becoming upset due to John not immediately conveying the news.
The problem is that the timing was terrible. The delivery was even worse!
It’s clear that when John eventually confided in Jamie about their intimate encounter, he was already filled with anger. Jamie found it hard to believe that John and Claire could have shared such a passionate night, which led Jamie to imply that John had coerced Claire. However, there was no chance that John would have tolerated such an accusation.
In addition, John wished to clarify that their thoughts were solely focused on Jamie and not Claire during that moment. He was aware that bringing up this matter might upset Jamie. From what we can gather from the novels, it’s clear they share a unique bond of friendship.
Jamie felt a sense of ease when John declined his proposal to deceive for the sake of John elevating William. John picked up on this relief, which made him understand the depth of their friendship. Moreover, John was aware of Jamie’s opinions about his lifestyle. Although they are friends, it doesn’t necessarily imply that Jamie endorses it. Had John been privy to Wentworth, he might have kept silent about whom he had in mind, but in retrospect, he should have refrained from doing so altogether.
It seemed as though John intended to cause harm to Jamie, but that action made little sense. Equally puzzling was the desire in John for such a violent response.
In a different phrase, it could be expressed as: Other methods would have been more effective for clarifying the whole scenario. Lord John Grey demonstrates a greater finesse in his actions compared to the foolish decision he made in the forest.
