Looking back as Andrew Lincoln talks about one of his favorite Walking Dead scenes

As a die-hard fan of The Walking Dead, I can confidently say that Andrew Lincoln’s portrayal of Rick Grimes was nothing short of phenomenal. His journey from the very first episode to his final scene was a rollercoaster ride filled with emotions, suspense, and unforgettable moments.

The TV series “The Walking Dead” was developed from a comic book written by Robert Kirkman. The central character in the comics, Rick Grimes, was superbly cast as Andrew Lincoln. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2015, Lincoln discussed his preferred scene and the moment he realized the show would be a hit.

On October 31st, 2010, the audience was introduced to Rick Grimes for the first time during the debut of AMC’s groundbreaking post-apocalyptic series, “The Walking Dead.” The scene showed Rick strolling along a road, carrying a gas can in one hand and a gun bag in the other. This onscreen moment would significantly impact the lives of most viewers.

As a gamer, I wasn’t originally intended to be the one playing Rick. Frank Darabont, our showrunner, had his heart set on Thomas Jane, whom he worked with in his film “The Mist,” for the part. Other actors who tried out for the role included Jamie Bamber from “Battlestar Galactica”, Mark Pellegrino from “Lost”, Stuart Townsend from “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, and Ethan Embry from “Can’t Hardly Wait”. Interestingly, even I, Ethan Embry, gave it a shot. In the end, we all ended up part of the series in different roles.

In this Entertainment Weekly video, Lincoln recounts the most significant day on set, the moment that made him believe the show would be successful. This moment came after Lincoln’s character awoke from a coma and encountered Morgan Jones, played by Lennie James, in Atlanta on horseback.

Andrew Lincoln – Rick Grimes

From season 1 through season 9, Lincoln played the character Grimes. However, he chose to leave the role after season 9 so he could focus on his family life. This was a difficult moment for the fanbase because Rick had been an essential part of the series from its very beginning. The show went on for two more seasons, but it never quite captured the same magic without Rick’s presence.

In the closing moments of the final episode of “The Walking Dead,” I, along with countless other fans, were gifted a special scene showcasing Rick and Michonne (played by Danai Gurira), who departed from the series during season 10 to embark on a quest for Rick. This brief moment sparked an electrifying surge of joy throughout the entire fanbase as we collectively cheered in anticipation.

In the sixth spinoff titled “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live“, Rick and Michonne make a comeback. This limited series premiered on AMC and AMC+ in 2024, focusing on their reunion and reunification with their children. The show served as an engaging means to carry forward their stories, providing insights into their lives during their separation.

Audience members are excitedly wondering if characters like Rick or Michonne might appear again in a future show, but so far, no details about such a return have been disclosed.

You can find all eleven seasons of “The Walking Dead,” eight seasons of “Fear the Walking Dead,” and season 1 of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” on Netflix. In addition, “Dead City” and “The Ones Who live” will be available for streaming in January 2025.
