Lokesh Kangaraj on Rajinikanth’s Coolie: ‘Wrote it down a long time ago, but we are going to witness it now’

The upcoming film “Coolie,” slated for release in 2025, is generating a lot of excitement. Starring Rajinikanth as the lead actor, the movie is set to premiere on August 14. In anticipation of its big debut, director Lokesh Kanagaraj recently sat down for an interview with Sudhir Srinivasan. During their lively conversation, the interviewer observed that Kanagaraj’s filmmaking style appeared unconventional.

Instead of developing a complete narrative initially and incorporating key scenes later, it seems that Lokesh Kanagaraj primarily focused on creating his key scenes first. The interviewer noted that this approach is often observed in action films, where emotional aspects are inserted afterwards. He inquired whether the director of Kaithi constructed the story around these significant scenes or started with the plot and then added crucial moments to it.

In response, Lokesh Kanagaraj clarified that his method frequently revolves around intricate sequences, using Leo as an illustration. Four years ago, during the production of Master, the filmmaker had already outlined the movie’s storyline. The key scenes for the Vijay-starrer had been preplanned at that time, and his team recalled them more vividly than he did, often reminding him if there were any changes made.

He shared that his movies don’t follow a traditional narrative path. Instead, they consist of linked events that give the impression of being interconnected. For Coolie, he had four such scenes planned out and was eager to film them. The director exclaimed, “I jotted down this concept long ago, but now we get to experience it in reality. That excitement comes to an end.

In response to the interviewer’s example suggesting that Vikram’s action scenes might not fit another film, Lokesh Kanagaraj concurred. He explained, “Rajinikanth shouldn’t play Vikram, Kamal Hassan shouldn’t play Coolie. These set pieces are unique and integral to the distinctive action sequences and mental challenges presented in the film. Therefore, they cannot be altered.

In the upcoming film titled “Coolie,” renowned actor Rajinikanth will share screen time with Upendra Rao, Soubin Shahir, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and other notable actors in significant parts of the story.
