Live-Action & CGI Hybrid Rugrats Movie in the Works, Director Set

As a child of the ’90s, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming live-action/CGI Rugrats movie! The original series was a staple of my youth, and I still find myself quoting lines from it to this day.

The infants are about to step into the actual world. As reported by Deadline recently, the popular Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats is being revamped as a live-action/CGI film. Jason Moore (Sisters, Shotgun Wedding) will direct the project, while Mikey Day from Saturday Night Live is penning the script alongside Streeter Seidell, who is also a head writer on SNL.

What do we know about the Rugrats movie?

At present, we only have information that the movie will blend real-life action with computer-generated imagery (CGI) animation, and no details about the casting choices have been disclosed yet. It remains unclear if the storyline will portray the characters as infants or depict them in a more mature form.

Back in 1991, I was glued to my TV as Rugrats made its debut on Nickelodeon – one of the first ever “Nicktoons.” Initially, it only ran for 65 episodes, but once it took off like wildfire, they kept pumping out more. In total, it aired over 150 episodes across nine seasons before calling it quits in 2004.

The show, during its duration, got three animated movies plus a spin-off series named “All Grown Up!” In 2021, a revival of the original series from creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain was launched on Paramount+.

The show primarily centered around the escapades of the main characters, such as Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil, Lil DeVille, and Tommy’s cousin Angelica. As the seasons progressed, new characters like Dil Pickles (Tommy’s younger sibling), Susie Carmichael, and Kimi Watanabe-Finster, Chuckie’s adopted sister, were introduced. A number of actors including Cheryl Chase, Tara Strong, Kath Soucie, Dionne Quan, Cree Summer, Jack Riley, Melanie Chartoff, and David Doyle played roles in the series, with others joining as well.
