In a statement, Marc Forster (the director) and I aimed for the music in ‘White Bird’ to enrich the storytelling. The score evokes setting and era, hinting at past and future lives, while keeping the youthful energy and inherent innocence of Sara and Julien present throughout. The music is designed to stir emotions within them, being fluid, frequently melancholic, yet also powerful and sharp.
In the movie White Bird, we delve into the story of Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has been grappling with feelings of not belonging since he was expelled from his previous school due to his behavior towards Auggie Pullman. To change his life for the better, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) eventually shares her own past filled with bravery — as a young girl in France under Nazi occupation, she was protected by a boy from mortal danger. They discover a deep affection for each other amidst an enchanting, mystical realm they create together, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) bravely puts everything on the line to keep her safe.
