LINE Launches Mini Dapps: Blockchain, Here We Go Again? 😂

LINE, you know, one of those apps that’s always trying to be the cool kid on the blockchain block, has decided to jump into the Web3 game headfirst. Through its Web3-focused arm, LINE NEXT, they’ve launched a bunch of decentralized applications, or as I like to call them, “Mini Dapps.” Yeah, right, like the world needed more of those.

Now, the reason for this move? Oh, you know, to make sure all their 200 million users can easily access these “innovative” applications. Because, you know, user access is the key to success, right? Not sarcasm, just saying.

LINE Thinks Mini Dapps Will Make Blockchain Easy Peasy

In their press release, they say these Dapps will cover gaming, social media, and other Web3 stuff. Basically, anything to get regular folks like us closer to blockchain. Who knew we needed blockchain in our daily lives?

And guess what? All these Dapps are powered by Kaia, a blockchain they’re developing with Kakao. Yes, Kakao, the other messaging app that’s also trying to be relevant. It’s like they’re having a blockchain bake-off or something.

So far, they’ve launched 32 Mini Dapps. Some examples? Bombie and Cattea, developed by Pluto Studio (because naming things is hard), and Superz, a healthcare and wellness gateway for non-crypto users (yes, they exist). And let’s not forget Captain Tsubasa -RIVALS-, a game based on the popular manga. Because every kid needs another soccer game, right?

LINE is aiming to launch over 1,000 projects by the end of the year. Just like how you plan to watch every episode of Friends in a single day. Ambitious, huh?

And, oh yeah, they’ve also launched a Dapp Portal. So you can explore all these Dapps and trade virtual assets and NFTs. Because who doesn’t want to do that?

A Lesson from Telegram? More Like a Copycat

LINE seems to be taking inspiration from Telegram’s success story. Telegram launched Dapps in 2024 and saw their user base skyrocket. So, LINE’s thinking, if it worked for Telegram, it’ll work for them too. Not that they’re copying or anything, of course.

LINE NEXT CEO Youngsu Ko is optimistic about their plans. He says these Mini Dapps will be the first large-scale Web3 user adoption case in Asia. Yeah, sure thing, CEO. Sure thing.
