Lin-Manuel Miranda Reveals Wicked Movie Role He Wanted, Why He Wasn’t Cast

Lin-Manuel Miranda is not in the movie adaptation of Wicked, but he wanted to be.

In a recent installment of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Miranda addressed the speculation surrounding Wicked castings and admitted that these rumors had been overstated. Nevertheless, she expressed her desire for a minor part in the film’s initial scenes.

Why was Lin-Manuel Miranda not cast in Wicked?

Miranda is good friends with director Jon M. Chu, who is known for directing Wicked. Together, they worked on the 2021 film adaptation of Miranda’s Tony-winning musical, In the Heights. Miranda asked Chu to remember him if any roles came up, and it turns out that Miranda had a particular part in mind.

Miranda told Colbert, “In the initial song of the play, one munchkin dashes out and asks, ‘Is it true you were her friend?’ This line can be quite impactful in a live performance of Wicked, as they often add some extra flair when delivering it.

Miranda adores that particular scene from the series, and yearned to reprise it for the film. Regrettably, his dream wasn’t realized.

“I was not cast,” Miranda explained to Colbert. “It would’ve been distracting.”

Miranda praised the actress in the film for her sincere delivery of the line, implying that if she were the one acting, her performance might resemble a character like Regina George from Mean Girls.

In the film “Wicked”, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande play the roles of Elphaba and Galinda respectively. This movie is a retelling of their friendship’s origins, detailing how these two witches eventually choose to follow separate paths – with Elphaba becoming the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda transforming into Glinda the Good.

Under the guidance of director Chu, Wicked emerged as one of the top-earning films of 2024 with a global box office collection of $722.3 million. The follow-up, titled Wicked: For Good, is set to hit theaters on November 21, 2025.
