Over three months have elapsed since Neowiz and Round 8 initially revealed Overture, an extensive DLC expansion for the popular title Lies of P. Marketed as a prequel to the main narrative, Overture aims to deepen the storyline of Geppetto’s puppet character, guiding players through multiple new locations and biomes. Recently, Shacknews was granted access to explore Lies of P: Overture, during which we were also shown several upcoming quality-of-life improvements destined for the base game.
In the chilly part of Krat, the demonstration session for “The Lies of P: Overture” began. As in previous battles, combat followed a Soulslike style, but this time, the cold posed an extra challenge. Some enemies could lower P’s temperature drastically with their attacks, and sustained frostbite would cause ongoing damage.
Following the encounter with the initial Stargazer, events take an unexpected and ominous turn as protagonist P approaches a seemingly forgotten zoo named Krat. Despite rumors of a fire years ago, Gemini the Cricket notes that Krat Zoo had supposedly been deserted for quite some time. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this zoo is now a breeding ground for hostile and dangerous wildlife. As P delves deeper into the exhibits, players will come across mutated, deadly creatures such as vicious baboons, colossal hippos, lethal kangaroos, and even some undead zookeepers. There’s even a section where mutant monkeys are found hanging from a rope bridge above, pelting passersby with their waste. Needless to say, engaging these animals can be perilous, as the next Stargazer may not always be nearby for assistance.
In the final act at Krat Zoo, they’ve saved the most impressive for last – an immense prehistoric beast known as the Tyrannical Predator. This colossal alligator lurks in its territory, ready to pounce on unsuspecting players. It attacks with lightning speed, snapping its jaws repeatedly before whipping out a powerful tail swipe. In Lies of P, understanding the enemy’s actions is crucial. The Predator can unleash a series of bite attacks that B can defend against, but different movements signal it intends to gulp down B. This requires quick reflexes and a well-timed dodge roll to avoid being swallowed.
In the realm of Krat Zoo, the Tyrannical Predator, much like other inhabitants, won’t back down without a fight. Some players might prefer a less intense experience. Luckily, the game Lies of P is about to become more accessible with the launch of Overture. Alongside Overture, the base game of Lies of P will receive an update that introduces two new difficulty levels. The current version of Lies of P will be renamed Legendary Stalker and serve as the default setting. For those seeking a narrative-heavy or slightly easier playthrough, they can choose from the newly added Butterfly’s Guidance and Awakened Puppet settings. While there’s still a need for Soulslike skills to advance in Lies of P and Overture, these new options should provide even a beginner in Soulslike games with a chance to fight.
In addition to the new difficulty settings, the upcoming feature “Battle Memories” in Lies of P’s main game will also introduce an extra challenge. This mode is essentially a series of battles against bosses that players have already defeated, each with varying levels of difficulty. Although you can choose from three primary difficulties, successfully defeating any boss on all three levels unlocks two more challenging tiers for the ultimate test. Battle Memories will feature three new Overture bosses, and based on my experience during the demo session, they won’t be easy to conquer. You should prepare yourself for these battles in the Overture section of the game.
- Markiona, Puppeteer of Death: A wicked puppeteer will come at P with an enchanted puppet of death while also attacking with her own magical blasts.
- Two-Faced Overseer: A helmeted fiend will strike down with his weapon, but watch out when his first head explodes, because it’ll be replaced by an enraged one that attacks relentlessly.
- Anguished Guardian of the Ruins: A horrifying beast will attack P with lightning blasts and an enchanted lance. It’ll also use its own body as a weapon, attacking with a falling splash that’s nearly impossible to avoid.
If players want to design their own sequence of boss battles, they can utilize the Death Match mode which will be part of the Battle Memories feature. This allows them to create personalized scenarios, where they can engage in multiple consecutive fights against at least three bosses. They’re free to adjust the difficulty level and make the experience as challenging as they prefer.
As an avid fan, I eagerly anticipate that Overture will significantly enhance my experience within Lies of P. However, those who choose not to delve into Overture won’t miss out entirely, as they too have a wealth of content to explore when the new Lies of P base game patch drops alongside it this summer.
The demonstrations shown in this preview are from two live events that took place at a private gathering in Los Angeles, California. These events were sponsored by the publisher who also covered our accommodation costs. Please note that the final product may still undergo changes.
