80-year-old renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran, a longtime staple in the Malayalam film industry, has sadly passed away. The sad news about his demise was announced by industry observer Sreedhar Pillai on platform X (previously known as Twitter).
As per multiple sources such as The Times of India, the singer had been fighting cancer for an extended period. During his treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur, he tragically passed away from the disease, leaving us with an enduring collection of timeless songs.
On March 3, 1944, P. Jayachandran was born in Ravipuram, which is located in Kochi, Kerala. He was the third-born child to Ravivarma Kochanian Thamburan, a member of the Cochin Royal Family residing at Tripunithura Kovilakam, and Subhadrakunjamma, who hailed from the Paliyam Palace.
In his younger days, Jayachandran’s family relocated from Kochi to Irinjalakuda, Thrissur. He finished both his schooling and education within that district. A degree holder in Zoology, he was also awarded multiple accolades for his skills in playing the mridangam and performing light music during his youthful years.
Throughout an impressive musical journey spanning many years, P. Jayachandran has sung approximately 16,000 songs in various languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. In addition to his singing career, he has also appeared in a handful of films and delved into acting.
Initially working in Malayalam music, he teamed up with numerous renowned musicians such as G. Devarajan, M.S. Baburaj, V. Dakshinamoorthy, K. Raghavan, M.S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, Koti, Shyam, M.M. Keeravani, Vidyasagar, A.R. Rahman, and many others.

In 1986, he was honored with the National Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the film Sree Narayana Guru. Furthermore, he collected several Kerala State Film Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
