As a die-hard fan of Andy Samberg‘s comedic genius, I must admit that seeing him delve into a dramatic role in “Lee” has been nothing short of captivating. His transformation from the quirky, laugh-inducing characters we’ve grown to love on shows like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Palm Springs,” to the serious and introspective David Scherman is a testament to his versatility as an actor.
Actor Andy Samberg from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Palm Springs” talked about taking on his first serious role in an upcoming biopic war drama by Roadside Attractions, titled “Roadside Attractions’ biopic war drama.” In the movie, Samberg portrays Life magazine photographer David Scherman, who is played by Oscar winner Kate Winslet. The film is set to hit theaters on September 27th.
The movie chronicles a crucial period in the life of American war reporter and photographer Lee Miller. Known for her extraordinary skill and relentless determination, Miller captured some of the 20th century’s most powerful and enduring images of war, such as the famous photograph of herself defiantly posed in Hitler’s private bathtub. Throughout her work, Miller demonstrated a deep compassion and empathy towards women and silent victims of war, capturing both the delicate vulnerability and fierce resilience of human existence. The film underscores how Miller lived life with unwavering passion, chasing truth at all costs, even if it meant enduring a significant personal toll as she was forced to confront a traumatic secret from her past.
What did Lee star Andy Samberg say about his role?
In a chat with GamesRadar+, Samberg shared that he needed to break free from familiar habits while working on Lee, having spent a considerable amount of time in comedy films and series beforehand.
Initially during filming, I found myself having to let go of my usual habits, Samberg explained. Instead of thinking about adding extra elements or humor, I had to trust the script and focus on discovering the most authentic portrayal of it, rather than improvising or making changes.
He continued, “I will say, as someone who is generally pretty cynical about everything, I guess I did allow myself to get more earnest and open to the process. I did see a lot of what you have to do by watching all of [the other actors]. You know, to give something that is elevated and takes it above.”
The movie “Lee” is being helmed by the accomplished cinematographer Ellen Kuras, based on a script penned by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume, and John Collee. The star-studded cast includes Alexander Skarsgård portraying Roland Penrose, Andrea Riseborough as Audrey Withers, and Marion Cotillard in the role of Solange d’Ayen. Other actors involved are Josh O’Connor as Antony Penrose, Noémie Merlant as Nusch Éluard, Arinzé Kene as Major Jonesy, Samuel Barnett as Cecil Beaton, James Murray as Colonel Spencer, Zita Hanrot as Ady Fidelin, and others. Winslet is not only starring in the film but also producing it, along with Kate Solomon, Troy Lum, Andrew Mason, Marie Savare, and Lauren Hant.
