This year’s EXPO in Chicago’s art scene is building anticipation, with “resonance,” a dynamic group exhibition at West Loop’s Anthony Gallery, curated by Lauren Halsey, on the horizon. A vibrant mix of 30 up-and-coming and seasoned artists will be showcased, as Halsey deliberately avoids the cold, sterile feel of traditional galleries, instead fostering an atmosphere that encourages joy, reviving past relationships, and forging new ones – akin to the essence of a lively game of kickball she describes as “the spirit of a kiccbacc.
The diverse installation, painting, photography, mixed media, and sculptures within it all echo a sense of richness. Each piece is deeply rooted in Halsey’s philosophy of creative collaboration, and the common theme is the depiction of people, plants, and animals as symbols for unity, compassion, and shared existence.
Known for her intricate foil collages on a grand scale, Halsey constructs immersive exhibits that weave together actual and fictional landscapes to create a unique mythology. By blending the stark imagery of South Central with symbols from ancient Egyptian art, her work generates thought-provoking spaces, combining personal experiences, ancestral wisdom, and forgotten narratives.
