Lars Wingefors is almost interchangeable with Embracer Group at this stage, but it’s not all positive, and this could be one reason he’s planning to step down as CEO of the group. Wingefors is slated to be succeeded as CEO by Phil Rogers, a former executive from Eidos and Square Enix, who will assume the role in August. Instead, Wingefors may take on a new role as Executive Chair of Embracer Group’s Board of Directors, which could commence by September.
This week, Embracer Group unveiled changes in their leadership structure. Their announcement highlighted that Mr. Wingefors will be stepping down as CEO.
As CEO, Lars Wingefors has been a dynamic and influential figure at Embracer Group. He played a crucial role in the rapid expansion strategy of acquiring numerous studios. However, under his leadership, there was also a significant setback when a $2 billion deal fell through, which subsequently resulted in the sale or closure of key studios like Volition, Gearbox Software, Saber Interactive, and the dismissal of approximately 1,400 employees following subsequent layoffs.
Given all that has transpired, it’s intriguing that Lars Wingefors remains a candidate for a Board position at Embracer. As the company navigates its challenges and mistakes, keep an eye out as Phil Rogers assumes leadership in August 2025.
