The upcoming “Lanterns” series on HBO has secured its Sinestro, as per reports from Deadline; Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen will portray the sinister character.
In the upcoming series, we’re not sure yet what part Sinestro will play, but in the DC Comics universe, he’s a significant antagonist in Green Lantern’s history. First appearing in 1961, Sinestro was once a Green Lantern who was dismissed due to misuse of his power and later formed his own evil group, the Sinestro Corps.
Unlike the Green Lantern Corps, who gain their powers through self-determination, Sinestro and his Yellow Lantern Corps harness power from fear, making him one of the most relentless antagonists in the annals of Green Lantern lore. Despite his generally appealing demeanor, this is a stark contrast to it.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge Antony Starr’s fame for his captivating portrayal of Kai Proctor in the original Cinemax series Banshee, and for his powerful performance in the 1998 film The Celebration. This talented Danish actor has also graced our screens in the 2020 series The New Pope and the 2022 drama Trom, leaving audiences spellbound with his acting prowess.
Who else is in the Lanterns cast?
In the upcoming series, Aaron Pierre will portray John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler is set to play Hal Jordan. According to a recent report by THR, filming for this project is expected to start between January and June of next year, so we can anticipate additional details to surface soon.
In addition to the already announced cast, Kelly Macdonald is set to portray Sheriff Kerry, while Poorna Jagannathan will take on the role of Zoe in the forthcoming series.
As a passionate gamer, I’m super excited to share that I’ll be part of an epic journey with Lanterns. This series is being executive produced by none other than Chris Mundy, known for his work on True Detective: Night Country and Ozark. Alongside him are Damon Lindelof, a name synonymous with The Leftovers and Watchmen, and Tom King, the genius behind Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Not only is Chris handling the executive production, but Lindelof and King will also be co-writing this series.
This project was first announced in January 2023, and it’s taken a little over a year for things to fall into place, with HBO officially giving us a straight-to-series order back in June 2024. I can hardly wait to see how this 8-episode project unfolds!
The plot of this show centers around John Stewart, a fresh recruit, and Hal Jordan, a legendary Green Lantern, who are both cosmic law enforcers. They become entangled in a sinister, small-town mystery on Earth when they investigate a murder that takes place in the heartland of America.
