Lanterns’ Aaron Pierre Almost Landed a Key Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Role

As a gamer with a keen eye for comic book adaptations and a soft spot for the Marvel Cinemic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but feel a tinge of what-might-have-been nostalgia upon learning that Aaron Pierre almost snagged the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

If Aaron Pierre had been chosen for a role in James Gunn’s last Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (released in 2023), his portfolio as a superhero could have taken on a distinct twist.

At New York Comic-Con, James Gunn hinted at several upcoming DC Universe projects, including one centered on Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan, with Pierre and Kyle Chandler playing the roles. Although Gunn didn’t share much information about this project during NYCC, he did mention that he was a longtime fan of Pierre even before the actor rose to fame in the 2024 Netflix movie, Rebel Ridge.

For quite some time, Aaron Pierre has been someone I’ve dreamed of collaborating with. Interestingly enough, it was almost him who played Adam Warlock, as shared by James Gunn during the panel discussion (reported by Collider).

In the 2017 film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and further developed in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the character Adam Warlock is introduced as a powerful synthetic being crafted by the Sovereign with the intention to annihilate the Guardians, acting as a secondary villain throughout the movie. However, by the film’s conclusion, Warlock shifts allegiance and joins forces with the Guardians, serving as a hero instead. Although it seemed like Pierre was on the verge of portraying the role, Will Poulter ended up playing Adam Warlock in the movies.

During the DCU presentation, James Gunn couldn’t help but sing the praises of Pierre, expressing that he is an exceptional actor whom he has long admired since the start of his career. One of those unforgettable instances was witnessing him rehearse with Kyle. Regardless of what others may be saying, I simply adore their on-screen chemistry.

What MCU role did Aaron Pierre almost land?

The oversight of the production for the Lanterns series will fall under Chris Mundy, who collaborated with Damon Lindelof and Tom King in creating this upcoming series. Although specific details about Lanterns are scarce, James Gunn revealed at NYCC that it’s going to be an exceptionally grounded show with a strong focus on reality, which is surprising for a Green Lanterns production. He also hinted that the show will present something entirely new and unique.

The DCU series centers around “John Stewart, a newcomer, and Hal Jordan, a legendary Lantern, both space-faring peacekeepers who find themselves embroiled in a sinister case unfolding on Earth, as they delve into an intriguing murder in the Midwest.

Beginning in January 2025, the eight-episode TV show is set to start its filming schedule, with production anticipated to continue until June. Notably, James Hawes, a well-known director in television, famous for his work on shows such as Snowpiercer, Black Mirror, and Slow Horses, will be at the helm for the first two episodes.

Under the chapter titled “Gods & Monsters,” Lanterns will be unveiled as part of the initial phase of James Gunn’s ten-year plan for the DC Universe. However, the specific launch date for this series is still undisclosed by HBO at this time.
